Music 1A Log

This page is sometimes used to keep an informal and incomplete log of class progress during the term.

Week One

• Monday 1/5: Introduction, etc.
• Tuesday 1/6: Introduction, etc.
• Wednesday 1/7: Collected first-week survey and reminded class about text, upcoming quiz (which may need to be delayed if text doesn’t arrive), grade codes, etc. Began elements: four basic elements, all of pitch, and most of dynamics (barely finished levels and did not do crescendo/diminuendo). Next: finish this quickly then move through the higher level concepts. (Note: Too many students arrive late today. Need to keep an eye on this.)
• Thursday 1/8: Same as Wednesday

Week Two

• Monday: First quiz, in the usual manner (start a few minutes late, comment on the process, re-take quiz option, and tie back to importance of studying the text). Complete dynamics, start musical time — up through tempo concepts. Next: meter, durations, timbre/instruments/voices.
• Tuesday: Essentially the same as Monday
• Wednesday: started on musical sound sources
• Thursday: started on musical sound sources

Week Three

• Monday: no class — holiday (now behind!)
• Tuesday: quiz. style periods (method for memorizing). very little about concert reports (save for Thursday)
• Wednesday: quiz. collected first homework (discussed low participation). reviewed style period names. voices (did not play, but otherwise done). did a very quick concert report assignment overview (will not have time to do more in the MW class.)
• Thursday: Overview of the concert report assignment. Continued with musical sound sources — finished woodwinds more or less, but did not play examples.
