2020 Winter

Monday 2/10

Return quizzes. Remind class of test this Wednesday, the next class. Start listening to #3 projects — essentially complete the first pass if appropriate. Work time on #4 — was due this week but almost certainly needs to e changed to next week. (Plot out deadlines for the rest of the term, if so.) Perhaps remind about the calendar and need to keep moving forward. Basic introduction to sound editing on the ES1.

Wednesday 2/12

Plan: Test #1. Did not listen to any projects today! (There is perhaps one #2 left to hear, and I’ll catch that when I hear #3 next Wednesday.) Continued working on #3 through the end of the period  — with my reminders about finishing these assignments up as quickly as possible. Need to hear #3 next time. #4 is indicated as being due next Wednesday, but with knowing that many will actually play it at the class after that. Add more information about the ES1, focusing on the ADSR and volume, with a quick look at a few other less-used controls. Work time on #3 and, for a few perhaps, #4.

2019 Winter

Monday 2/11

Return quizzes. Remind class of test next week. Started listening to #3 projects — essentially completed the first pass. Work time on #4 — was due this week, but more likely students will be ready to play next Wednesday. Spoke about the calendar and need to keep moving forward. Basic introduction to sound editing on the ES1.

Wednesday 2/13

Heard #3. (Any remaining students need to tell me that their project is ready.) Collected and reviewed quiz #2 at start of the period. Reminded class that test 2 is at our next meeting. Added more information about the ES1, including what filters actually do and how to control them with an ADSR.

2017 Spring

Monday 5/15

Return quizzes. Remind class of test at next class meeting. Check to see if anyone still has a #3 to show. Work time on #4 — supposedly due today, but more likely students will be ready to play in on Wednesday. Go over the requirements and techniques for #5.

Tuesday 5/16

We are at that point in the Music 8 class where things sometimes seem to bog down a bit as the complexity of all of the various pieces that must work together becomes apparent. Most were still working on #3 all period, though perhaps a half dozen had finished. I reviewed the entire setup sequence again for creating a velocity layered multi-sample instrument today, and then how to attach the Matrix Sequencer. (This was a review only for those who felt they needed it.) I still probably need to do a similar review for interconnecting effects for assignment #4.  Returned graded quizzes and gave the class a brief preview of the upcoming need to select a subject for class projects.

Wednesday 5/17

Test #1. Work on #4. First assessment of #4 — others at next session. Briefly reviewed importance of playing with the click track, how to use global tracks to create tempo maps, and reminded how to edit ES1 for next assignment. (Some have already gone on to #5.)

Thursday 5/18

With possibly one exception among those present, I heard the remaining #3 assignments, and everyone has moved on to #4. These two assignments are producing some frustrations with the inevitable “little problems,” but I think we are working through them. I changed deadlines for #4-#6 to reflect reality. I announced that we would go over the nitty gritty of the presentation proposal next time. I think it is important to move beyond so much lab time and to get back on track with new techniques — probably the sampling techniques for #5 — since the students who are more able to keep up are starting to feel that our progress is bogging down — hence some absences and early departure from class.

2017 Winter

Monday 2/13

Work time on #4 (and #3). Start to first pass of #3 assignments — but only got to a couple of them as quite a few either were not yet finished and/or did not manage to spread the four drum parts across four tracks with the same instrument. Remind about quiz (this Wednesday) and test (next Wednesday). Started to introduce very basic editing on the ES1 (for assignment 5) including oscillator controls only at this point.

Tuesday 2/14

Not this quarter

Wednesday 2/15

Heard #3 — a complete 1st pass — and will do second pass next time during the period. Collected and reviewed Quiz #2. Reminded class that test #1 is a week from today — but also our next meeting since we have a Monday holiday. Continued on editing with the ES1. Work time to finish #3 and start work on #4.

Thursday 2/16

Not this quarter.

2016 Fall

Monday 10/31

Work time on #4. Heard the few remaining #3 assignments. Remind about quiz (due Wednesday) and test (next Monday). Introduced some minor subjects including undo history and global automation in Logic — the global tracks controls for meter and tempo, plus how to add the master or output track to the main window and automate it. Introduced very basic editing on the ES1 (for assignment 5) including all the basics: octave, the oscillators, the mix fader, the cutoff and resonance faders on the filter, and ADSR basics.

Tuesday — 11/1

Not this quarter

Wednesday — 11/2

Most finished #4 as per due date. Heard many of them, but need to do a second pass for a small group next time. Give a very clear reminder of test #1 deadline next Monday and how to prepare for it. Went over a strategy for working on #5, the ES1 Sound assignment.

Thursday —11/3

Not this quarter.

2016 Spring

Monday 5/9

Work time on #4. Heard the few remaining #3 assignments. Remind about quiz/test. Introduced some global automation in Logic — the global tracks controls for meter and tempo, plus how to add the master or output track to the main window and automate it. Presented the second electronic music history subject. Quiz #2 announced and due one week from today, with test #1 to be next week Wednesday, the class meeting following the quiz #2 due date.

Tuesday — 5/10

Test #1 today. Introduced automation in Reason, using mostly the mixer. There were questions about Redrum, so showed how to set up a separate mixer for Redrum with one sound per channel so as to automate each drum independently and how to add effects to each individually. Heard assignment #3. Work time on #4. (Perhaps 2-4 students still need to show #3.)

Important note: Near the end of the period, as I was hearing individual projects, quite a few students took this as an opportunity to leave early! Need to discuss the importance of “working ahead” on the next project, making the work better once it is finished, and using time to explore program features and options — not taking off early!

Wednesday — 5/11

Significant work time on #4. Did not plan to hear them, but wanted them completed by the end of the period. Give a very clear reminder of quiz #2 deadline next Monday and emphasized that there would be no extension this time. Explain the Undo History  feature. Introduced manual modification of the ES1 for assignment #5. (Had “the talk” with the class about resisting the temptation to take days off in the spring term.)

Thursday —5/12

Lots of work time on #4 today. A few were finished at the end of the period and many others said they needed between 15 and 30 minutes. (A few need more.) This means that we can hear it next time with the “second pass” option providing extra time. We looked at various Reason interface elements — the Tools window, rearranging the panels, editing in the sequencer. (Probably should look at some of the transport controls still — loop, click, pre, and so forth.) Began an explanation of how to get audio from large recordings, how to extract and (basically) edit the sample, and how to import it into a Reason sampler. Because of limited time, the sample editing part of this was very brief, and we probably need to look at it more closely next time.

Also, today I did the first explanation of the presentation assignment. I urged students to start doing some thinking about potential projects, with a goal of being able to share they vague plans by next Thursday – at which point I’ll formally describe the proposal assignment.

2016 Winter

Monday 2/8

Work time on #4. Heard #3. Remind about quiz/test. Introduced some global automation in Logic — the global tracks controls for meter and tempo, plus how to add the master or output track to the main window and automate it.

Tuesday — 2/9

Not this quarter.

Wednesday — 2/10

Returned and briefly reviewed quiz #1. Students turned in and then we reviewed quiz #2. Did a quick initial introduction to the ES1 for assignment #5. Work time on #4 — some finished but others not at end of period. Listen to them at next session most likely. Reminder that test is due at next session.

Thursday —2/11

Not this quarter.

Friday

(not offered every quarter)

2015 Fall

Monday 10/26

Work time on #4. Heard #3. Remind about quiz/test. Start synthesis material for #5 — introduced the basic controls on the ES1, how to save and load sounds on the ES1. Did not yet assign a date for #5. Many #3 are yet to be heard — see below. Likely this will require a delay on #3, especially with quiz coming in on Wednesday.

Note: #3 posed some problems for students who thought they were finished but actually were not. The issues were in two areas. First, while many did use the copy, alias, and loop, they did not use them in places that make sense — so I asked them to revise the projects to do so. Second, not everyone managed to split the four percussion parts across four tracks using the same instrument number.

Tuesday — 10/27

Not this quarter.

Wednesday — 10/28

Quiz #1 was not quite ready to return — must grade and return next session. Collected and reviewed quiz #2. Finished hearing assignment #3. Officially #4 had been sort of due today, though the page said that it would change — and I made the official change to make it due on Monday — we’ll certainly need some work time that day plus the first pass. Announced that test #1 is Wednesday next week. Students who have finished #4 (perhaps 3 of them) have been told to go on to #5, and we have done the introduction to basic editing on the ES1.

Thursday —10/29

Not this quarter.

Friday

(not offered every quarter)

2015 Spring

Monday 5/11

Presented the second electronic music history topic; assigned quiz #2 for one week from today, and scheduled the first test for Wednesday of next week, the day after quiz #2 is due. The rest of the period was work time  — a few may have continued on #3 but the class was encouraged to move on to #4 since it is due next Wednesday. Returned quiz #1.

Wednesday: Work time on #4. Hear all of the rest of #3. (Perhaps look ahead to #5 if time?)

Tuesday — 5/12

Plan: Returned quiz #2 and a few remaining quiz #1. Reminded the class that the midterm will be on Wednesday. Demonstrated how to send individual instrument outputs to mixer channels on the 14:2 mixer. Showed the other mixer. Heard some previously-missed assignment #2 and heard #3.

Wednesday — 5/13

Returned quiz #1 to those who had not received it. Reminded class about next quiz due date and about the first written test. Heard all remaining #3 projects. Work time on #3 and #4.

Thursday —5/14

Plan: Test #1. Hear remaining #3, perhaps some #4, plus work time on #4. Introduce the class presentation assignment. Need to follow up on this in week 7 in several ways: show the presentation form, announce the deadline date for proposals, do the classroom activity where students compare and discuss their current ideas about proposal topics. (Not surprisingly, #4 was not finished during class, though I urged students to try to complete it by he end of the period. Perhaps more surprisingly, there were quite a few who thought they were done with #3 who had issues with their projects, most often with the velocity layers in the NNXT, though also with configuration of the Matrix Sequencer.) In sum, need to simultaneously hear the remaining #3 and also #4 on Tuesday.

Friday

(not offered every quarter)

2015 Winter

Monday 2/9

Heard #3 from all but a few — ask the remaining students to play them on Wednesday, but don’t take much class time for this. Introduced signal processors in Logic. Reminded that assignment #4 is coming up, and that we have a schedule challenge with another holiday next Monday. Next: second EM history topic, take-home quiz #2, and date for test #1.

Tuesday — 2/10

Continued work time on #3 — the assignment using the NN-XT, NN-19, and Matrix Sequencer. No one is finished yet, but many are nearing completion, so we should be on track to hear these assignments near the end of the period on Thursday, as per the schedule. Introduced signal processors (for assignment #4) in both serial and parallel configurations. THURSDAY: TEST #1.

Wednesday — 2/11

Returned graded quiz #1 and briefly reviewed it again. Reviewed upcoming dates: quiz 2 due next Wednesday, Test 1 the Monday after that (2/25?). Presented the second electronic music history topic.

Thursday —2/12

Work time on #3, as virtually everyone needs more time still. Reminded class that we have been over the skills for #4. Took the first test.

Friday

(not offered every quarter)

2014 Spring

Monday 5/12

Work time on #4 at start and end of period. Presentation of second electronic music history subject in between. Announced dates for take-home quiz #2 and test #1

Tuesday 5/13

Began with 15 minutes of work time on #3. Then introduced the 14:2 and 6:2 mixers, both to mix multiple synths and to mix the multiple outputs of the Redrum. More work time on #3. Re-did the demo of mapping root keys for those who are having a hard time grasping it. (Using the NN19.) Demonstrated how to bring samples into the NNXT and how to map them and create layers, including velocity layers. More work time on #3. Hoped to demonstrate/explain signal processors plus series and parallel connections, but did not really have time—only did a very basic, quick demo of how to connect one device in sequence. Next session!

It seems like almost no one has yet completed #3, the sampler/matrix assignment—no surprise! Class will need some additional time to work on this on Thursday. Still hopeful that at least some will finish it that day. May want to save the more advanced parts of signal processing (e.g. – parallel connections via the mixer aux system) for a later class, if that allows them to finish the sampling assignment on Thursday.

Wednesday 5/14

Returned graded quiz #1 and briefly reviewed it again. Reviewed upcoming dates: quiz 2 due next Monday, Test 1 next Wednesday, #4 due next Monday (though I suspect some may not be quite finished at start of period), the post Memorial Day deadline for #5, and a brief comment about what follows that. More work time on #4. Then introduced the ES1 and its basic controls—fairly thorough discussion in the context of this class. Then more work time on #4.

Thursday 5/15

Mostly work time on #3, as virtually everyone needs more time still. Reviewed some of the ins and outs of designing sample instruments and of using the Matrix Sequencer.  Still need to complete the preparation for assignment #4, particularly regarding the use of the 14:2 mixer and aux sends/returns with signal processors. Do on Monday.

Friday 5/16

(not offered every quarter)

2014 Winter

Monday 2/10 – Finished hearing a few remaining #2 today, and heard some #3 near the end of the period. Mostly work time on #3. Discussed with the class concerns about getting behind, especially with a Monday holiday next week – and that we will not always have quite as much time as we want to finish projects if we are to have enough time left for final projects near the end of the term. Reminder about the quiz due on Wednesday. (Need to do the second history topic soon, schedule the midterm, and present material for assignment 5)

Tuesday 2/11 – Lots of work catching up on the samplers today. Went over how to create layers (regular and velocity) on the NNXT. Also reviewed how to create key zones on the XT and the 19. Collected quiz #2 and reviewed it. Announced the date for test #1. Added two steps to assignment #4 – related to layers.

Wednesday 2/12 – Collected and reviewed quiz #1. (Good completion rate!) Heard may assignment #3, but some still need to show me at the next class. Set dates for quiz 2 and test 1, announced them, but they will be dependent on doing the history presentation at the next class.

Thursday 2/13 – Mostly work time on #4. Slightly more than half the class claimed to be finished. I heard 1 (!) #4 and told the class that I’ll hear the rest on Tuesday – with a first pass shortly after class starts and a second pass much later in the period. During today’s class I demonstrated how to connect signal processors in series with a sound module (using the Subtractor). Mentioned assignment #5 near the end of the period, but need to go over the 14:2 mixer next time in order for class to do the whole thing. Returned quiz #2 and reminded class that test #1 is one week from today on Thursday.

Friday 2/15 (not offered every quarter)

2013 Spring

Monday 5/13

  • The schedule had indicated assignment #4 due today, but only two students were finished – not surprising in that we are at least one class session ahead of last term. I changed the deadline until this Wednesday and made most of today’s session work time on this assignment.
  • I reminded the class to print the quiz today if they had not already done so – it is due at the next class.
  • IdidaverycursoryintroductiontotheES1 and editing.
    • Quick explanation of the “foot” octave transposition buttons
    • The Mix fader
    • Very (!) basic explanation that waveform affects tone color
    • Extremely basic description of what a filter does (alters tone color), plus basic settings
    • Very brief explanation of ADSR – actually only A and R.
    • Need to review what else needs explaining for the assignment – especially how to save and recover sounds, where and how to store them, etc.
  • Work on assignment 4
  • (Perhaps second em history topic next time?)

Tuesday 5/14

  • Announce test #1 for this Thursday 5/16
  • Announce the one-time “resubmit” option for a quiz.
  • Returned quizzes
  • Reviewed operation techniques for both samplers when building pitched samples – e.g. mapping root keys, key zones, and velocity layers.
  • Heard #4.

Wednesday 5/15

  • Collected and reviewed quiz #1. (About 2/3 of class did the quiz.)
  • There was a small amount of work time on the current or next project.
  • Presented the second electronic music history topic – only played one musical example by Schaeffer.
  • Announced that quiz 2 is due one week from today.
  • Announced that test 1 is two weeks from today.
  • Heard some but not all #4 assignments – need to hear most at start of period next time!

Thursday 5/16

  • Accepted “resubmit” quizzes from students who decided to take advantage of this one-time option.
  • Took test #1
  • Introduced the class presentation assignment, going over dates, possible subjects, the proposal. Set deadline for proposals.
  • Work time on assignment #5.

Friday 2/15 (not offered every quarter)

Presidents Holiday – campus closed.

  • Introduced basic info for assignment #5: But only very superficially. (Went quickly over octave, waveform, mix, cutoff, and ADSR, but with very little explanation. The main idea was to make it possible for those who want to get started on #5 to figure it out by trying it. May need to review and expand next time.

Thursday 5/17

Plan:

  • Demonstrated how to build sample instruments in the NN19 and NNXT (got far enough that students can do assignment 5)
  • Work time on #4
  • Heard #4 – got to about half the class (started on left) and need to hear the rest next class.
  • Announced test 1 for next Thursday 2/21
  • Announced Assignment #5 for same day, but more likely the following Monday

Presidents Holiday – campus closed.

2012 Spring

Monday 5/14

Heard a few last #3 assignments. Reviewed quiz 1.  Work time on #4, which is due at next class session.  Next class: need to hear #4 and present material for starting #5. Did the second EM history assignment and announced quiz due date.

Tuesday 5/15

Continued with samplers: how to build an instrument from raw samples, how to create velocity layers, all about root keys, mapping pitches to keyboard, and related issues. Work time on next project. Next up will be re-wire, though timing depends on work time required for current assignment and the need to do the written test.

Wednesday 5/16

Introduced the background information for assignment 5 – using the Subtractor to create and save sounds. Some work time on #4. Heard most #4 assignments, but did not get to perhaps a quarter of them – I’ll need to hear those next time. Had an overabundance of late arrivals today… Still need to do a more logical introduction to loop recording and perhaps to quantizing. Did the second EM presentation, and assigned quiz 2 as due next week. Announced #5 as due Feb. 27.

Thursday 5/17

Heard a small number of remaining #4 assignments and one (!) assignment 5. Work time on #5 and, obviously, hear #5 next week. Did the first half of the rewire introduction – connecting the hardware device to mixer inputs in Logic, with either the mixer or individual synths in Reason as inputs to the hardware interface.NOTE: Test 1 is, as of today, listed as “around May 22.” Need to set definitive date next week, and make it Thursday, 5/24.DID NOT: Introduced the splitter/merger. Also next week(?), discuss the class presentation assignments.

Friday 2/17

No Friday class this quarter.

2012 Winter

Monday 2/13

Heard a few last #3 assignments. Students who have not shown this yet must let me know when done. Reviewed quiz 1.  Work time on #4, which is due at next class session.  Near the very end of the period, did an extremely quick and very, very basic overview of editing the ES 1 for those who want a head start on the next assignment.

Tuesday 2/14

Introduced samplers in Reason. Covered the NN19 pretty thoroughly and the NNXT reasonably well. Went over the business about mapping root keys to sample pitch. Heard a few remaining examples of assignment 4. Announced deadline for assignment 5 that uses the samplers and the matrix sequencer.

Wednesday 2/15

Collected some late quiz #1. Did a longer and more complete introduction to very basic sound editing on the ES1. Work time on #4. Still need to do a more logical introduction to loop recording and perhaps to quantizing. Did the second EM presentation, and assigned quiz 2 as due next week. Announced #5 as due Feb. 27.

Thursday 1/16

Heard a small number of remaining #4 assignments. Work time on #5. Introduced the splitter/merger. (Next topic must be Rewire. Also next week, discuss the class presentation assignments.)

Friday 2/17

No class – Presidents holiday.

2011 Fall

Monday 10/31

Heard a few last #3 assignments. Students who have not shown this yet must let me know when done. Did 2nd EM topic. Announce quiz #1 #2, and test 1.  Work time on #4, which is due at next Monday’s class session.

Tuesday 11/1

No 8 this quarter

Wednesday 11/2

Collected first quiz and reviewed. Work time on currently due project #4. Will delay playback of #4 until Monday’s class. Announced due date for #5 as next Wednesday. Announced test 1 date one week after that.

Introduced global tracks. Went over ES1 editing for the next assignment – did basics of octave, oscillators, filter – did not do ADSR.

(Future/next topics to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.)

Thursday 11/3

No 8 this quarter

Friday 5/13

We are accelerating the schedule this week since there are two fall term holidays, including one next Friday. Today we reviewed quizzes #1 and #2, both of which were due today. Test #1 is at the end of the period. Work time on #4, which is due later in the period. Introduce basic ES 1 editing techniques for assignment #5, which students may start today. Will need some work time on it at next meeting in two weeks, since it will be due later in the period that day.

2011 Spring

Monday 5/9

Went over ES1 editing for the next assignment. Work time on #4, which is due at next class session. Introduced global tracks.

Next time: second electronic music topic. Announce date for test 1

Tuesday 5/10

Went over quiz 2. NEGLECTED TO SET TEST DATE – DO THIS NEXT TIME. Heard remaining assignment #4. Introduced the basics of Rewire, including how to rewire the Reason Mixer or individual Reason instruments into Logic. Did not do the External MIDI aspect of this yet – for next time?

Did not yet assign the deadline for submitting proposals – perhaps do that before that start of Thursday’s class? The rest of the period was work time on the NNXT/NN19/Matrix assignment that is due next meeting.

Wednesday 5/11

Collected first quiz and reviewed. Work time on currently due project #4. Will delay playback of #4 until the start on next Monday’s class. Announced due date for #5 as next Wednesday. Announced test 1 date one week after that. Did second EM history topic.

(Future/next topics to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.)

Thursday 5/12

Changed course just a bit today. Did second rewire session in which we create arrange tracks in logic that hold midi data for reason instruments. The assignment based on this is due next Thursday

Introduced the class presentation assignment and explained roughly how it works. Set deadline for proposals as two weeks from today. (Will need to check in on progress sometime during next week’s class – likely on Thursday.) Posted and announced the date of test #2 – see quiz schedule.

Delayed deadline for #5 – which had been today – until the first half of next Tuesday’s class. (Note: It is quite possible that having #6 finished by next Thursday may be too aggressive of a schedule.)

Friday 5/13

Not this term

2011 Winter

Monday  2/7

Reviewed quiz 1. Changed deadline for next assignment (4) from end of today to middle of next session. (At next session, start with new material for next assignment – e .g sound editing of logic basics –  follow with 45 minutes work time on #4, etc.) Introduced second electronic music topic – BUT DID NOT PLAY VARESE YET.

Announced:
Quiz 2 due next Monday
Test 1 the next class session after that on Wednesday

Tuesday 2/8

Mentioned the date of the test in a week and that it covers the two quizzes. Handed back the quizzes. Introduced the basic idea of the presentation assignment and talked a bit about selecting topics. Did not yet assign the deadline for submitting proposals – perhaps do that before that start of Thursday’s class? The rest of the period was work time on the NNXT/NN19/Matrix assignment that is due next. At the end of the period it seemed like a few were done, but certainly not all. Likely will need some time for this at next class. Also at next class, probably time to start introducing material for next assignment using Rewire – perhaps near start of period for those finished with current assignment and ready to go on.

Wednesday 2/9

Introduced the basic methods of modifying/creating sound on the ES1 as required for assignment 5. DID NOT ANNOUNCE DEADLINE FOR ASSIGNMENT 5 YET – it will likely be the first session after the break.

DID NOT hear #4 after all. Only perhaps a half dozen students were finished. MUST hear them near start of next period – no more work time – play them in whatever form they are in.

(Future/next topics to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.)

Thursday 2/10

Changed course just a bit today. Introduced the use of Rewire to interconnect Reason and Logic. Covered all three aspects in at least a basic way: connecting mixer audio from Reason into Logic Mixer, connecting individual instrument to Logic Mixer, and creating external MIDI tracks in Logic. Because of this, did not hear #5 at end of period. Will do this at start of class on Tuesday.

Friday 2/11

Review quiz #2. Grade and return quizzes #1 and #2. Work time on #5 (and for some #4). Test 1 after break. More work time on #5. Introduction to Logic audio editing for #6 – may need to return to this since today’s intro was very basic and brief. Hear remaining #4 and #5.

Fall 2010

Monday  10/25

Reminder about quiz #1 due at next class. (Need to do next topic, schedule quiz and test 1.) Did a very quick introduction to sound editing on the ES1, including how to save an instrument. Heard assignment 3. Reminder about assignment 4.  Introduced the ES1 editing needed for assignment 5. (Might need to make brief mention of editing on EFM 1 next time?)

Tuesday 10/26

Heard all remaining current project (4?). Went over an example of how to construct a pitched sample instrument from individual samples. Did early introduction of the class presentation project – mostly just to get students thinking about it. Next project due soon.

Wednesday 10/27

Reviewed first quiz after turning it in. Did NOT do next topic yet – will do that next time. (Going a bit slow since we are ahead of the Friday class.) Introduced the EFM1 and went over requirements for #4 and #5. Decided to wait until Monday to hear #4 – close to the start of the period.

Next time must do second electronic music history topic and quiz 2 for next class. Good idea to also set and announce date for test 1.

(Future/next topics to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.)

Thursday 10/28

Did a very basic introduction to the class presentation assignment, but did not yet assign a due date for presentation proposals – this was more about getting people thinking about the presentations. Need to assign proposals at the next class – due the following week.

Went further into Rewire – mapped separate Reason instruments directly through the hardware interface and then individually into Logic tracks. Have not yet made the assignment for #6 – need to start the period next Tuesday with this.

Friday 10/29

Largely same as MW, with deadlines, etc. as listed.Tentative plan as of start of class:
1. review quiz – OK

Spring 2010

Monday 5/10

Reviewed quiz #1. Mentioned that coverage of next quiz topic would be on Wednesday, with due date for next quiz to be Monday, May 17. (Test could be 5/19 or 5/24.) Did a very quick introduction to sound editing on the ES1, including how to save an instrument. Heard assignment 4.

Tuesday 5/11

Heard all remaining current project (4?). Went over an example of how to construct a pitched sample instrument from individual samples. Did early introduction of the class presentation project – mostly just to get students thinking about it. Next project due soon.

Wednesday 5/12

Did second electronic music history topic. Assigned quiz 2 for next class. Did a quick review of how to edit and save ES1 and EFM1 instruments. Heard some remaining #4 projects (automation and effects). Covered the ES1 sufficiently for project #5, which is due at the end of class next Wednesday.

(topics to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.)

Thursday 5/13

Did a very basic introduction to the class presentation assignment, but did not yet assign a due date for presentation proposals – this was more about getting people thinking about the presentations. Need to assign proposals at the next class – due the following week.

Went further into Rewire – mapped separate Reason instruments directly through the hardware interface and then individually into Logic tracks. Have not yet made the assignment for #6 – need to start the period next Tuesday with this.

Friday 5/14

Largely same as MW, with deadlines, etc. as listed.

Winter 2010

Monday 2/8

Heard about half of the next assignment – the rest to be heard in class on Wednesday. Collected/reviewed first quiz. Next topic at Wednesday class, followed by quiz 2 due date a week later (given the Monday holiday) and test after that as indicated on quizzes page. Did VERY quick and cursory intro to editing the ES1, though no more than pointing out that there are control and where to find them, and how to save an instrument.

Tuesday

2/9

Project 5 due today – heard almost all but there are still a few to hear at the next class. (Project semi-due in the next week or so.) Did the very basic intro to Rewire, including how to start the programs and how to set up a channel strip in the Logic mixer and how to create an audio track in Logic for automation.

Wednesday

2/10

Heard some remaining #4 projects (automation and effects). Covered the ES1 sufficiently for project #5, which is due at the end of class next Wednesday. Did second EM history topic and assigned quiz 2 as due next Wednesday – next class meeting.

(topics

to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.)

Thursday

2/11

Did a very basic introduction to the class presentation assignment, but did not yet assign a due date for presentation proposals – this was more about getting people thinking about the presentations. Need to assign proposals at the next class – due the following week.

Went further into Rewire – mapped separate Reason instruments directly through the hardware interface and then individually into Logic tracks. Have not yet made the assignment for #6 – need to start the period next Tuesday with this.

Friday

10/30

No class due to Presidents Day holiday

Fall 2009

Monday 10/26

Will present the first EM topic next time with quiz to follow at Monday class and then first test very soon thereafter – also need to do the second topic as soon as next Monday. Work time on #4 with projects due at end of period. Did VERY quick and cursory intro to editing the ES1, though no more than pointing out that there are control and where to find them, and how to save an instrument. In order to stay on track with Friday class (which moves ahead now, but falls back later) need to do the intro to editing the ES1 very soon.

Tuesday 10/26

After hearing the last of #4 we had some work time on project 5 which is now due at the END of the period next class. Introduced the use of the NN19, both to bring in pre-set sample instruments and to build an instrument from individual samples. Still did not assign the quiz! Need to do that and perhaps demo the NN-XT next time – though one or both could wait a session if time is needed for work on #5.  (Save for later:  basic introduction to Rewire –  stereo audio from Reason into the Logic mixer and then  individual instruments from Reason into separate Logic tracks/channel strips.)

Wednesday 10/28

Heard some remaining #4 projects (automation and effects). Covered the ES1 sufficiently for project #5, which is due at the end of class next Monday. Did not do the EM history session yet – intentionally delayed it until next Monday… but really need to do it then. Will need work time on #5 on Monday, and could delay deadline until start of Wednesday class if necessary to do EM history.

Should

also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation, possibly automation of values other than pan/volume.

Thursday 10/29

Project 6 is next week – maybe… I did not announce it or go over required techniques yet. Need to do this next week on Tuesday. (STILL NEED TO DO THE QUIZ.) DID: introduce the NN-XT. How to do layers, including velocity layers. Heard #5 from most students but a few need to be checked next Tuesday. Introduced the CV Splitter/merger, mostly in the context of splitting. Very briefly pointed out the existence of the audio equivalent module. Only checked a couple #1 assignments. Need to follow up on this next time.

(Did not yet do the basic introduction to Rewire. Rewired audio from Reason into the Mixer in Logic – from the Reason Mixer (stereo) and from the Reason Interface (individual channel per instrument).

Friday 10/30

Reviewed Quiz #1 at start of period. Did a brief overview of the EFM 1. Went over the ADSR on the ES 1. Introduced imported audio – but only basics: download from sampleswap.org, import audio to track – did not look at audio editor at all. Need to finish into to using audio samples in Logic next week and assign #6 as due at following session. Should probably assign the Logic quiz next week for due date at class after that, leaving one more topic preso for later. (For assign 6 which will likely be due not next week but the following class session.) Did EM topic two and assigned quiz. Announced quiz due at start of next class and Test #1 at end of same session.

Monday 5/11

Presented the second EM history topic, assigned quiz due Wednesday, announced test for one week from today. Work time on #4 with projects due at end of period… but fewer than half of the students had completed it – so remaining students can play it back at the start of the period on Wednesday. (Before?/After? the quiz is reviewed?)

Tuesday 5/12

Primarily work time on project 5 which is now due at the start of the period next class. Reviewed harmonics and frequency modulation sidebands for the take-home quiz that is due at the start of the period on Thursday. Did a quick introduction to the NNXT, demonstrating how to load instruments and samples, how to create a simple layer, and the basic concept of velocity layers. (Save for later: Did the basic introduction to Rewire – brought stereo audio from Reason into the Logic mixer and then brought individual instruments from Reason into separate Logic tracks/channel strips.)

Wednesday 5/13

Collected and reviewed quiz 2. Announced that test 1 will be one week from today on Monday. Introduced the editing of plugin synths in Logic – used the ES1 Subtractive Synth mostly, but also a bit of EFM, ESX24, and Ultrabeat – and how to save settings for later use. Heard assignment 4. Made assignment 5. (Next class will also largely be a work session on assignment 5 – though perhaps return the two quizzes at the beginning and do the test at the end!) (Still need to perhaps take a closer look at the mixer, including how to record automation directly from the mixer controls. Perhaps need to take a quick look at editing the EFM 1 synth.) (Question: Did we cover the automation of plug-in controls in this class?)

Thursday 5/14

Project 6 is next week. Did the basic introduction to Rewire. Rewired audio from Reason into the Mixer in Logic – from the Reason Mixer (stereo) and from the Reason Interface (individual channel per instrument). Demonstrated how to add a track in the Arrange window for  each input from Reason. Did NOT describe assignment 6 – must do that next time.

Friday 5/15

Review quiz 2 at start of period. Then heard playback of all remaining project 4. Introduce editing techniques for assignment 5* and provide some work time on it – need to specify deadline (start or end of the following week?). Test 1 during final 45 minutes of period – students who complete test early may work on #5. *This included a decent exploration of the ES1, a short intro to EFM, and very brief look at EXS24 and Ultrabeat.

Monday 2/9

BWork time on project 4 (deadline now  end of Wednesday class). EM History 2 topics. Quiz 2 due Wednesday. Announced test #1 for a week from Wednesday.

Wednesday 2/11

Collected and reviewed quiz 2. Announced that test 1 will be one week from today on Wednesday. Introduced the editing of plugin synths in Logic – used the ES1 Subtractive Synth only – and how to save settings for later use. DID NOT HEAR ASSIGNMENT 4 AGAIN – MUST DO THIS AT START OF NEXT CLASS. (Next class will also largely be a work session on assignment 5.) (Still need to perhaps take a closer look at the mixer, including how to record automation directly from the mixer controls. Perhaps need to take a quick look at editing the EFM 1 synth.) (Question: Did we cover the automation of plug-in controls in this class?)

Thursday 2/12

Project 5 is due today. Did a very, very basic introduction to Logic and went over a few basics regarding sample instrument design on the NNXT.

Friday 2/13
General plan for 5/15/09: Collect and review quiz 2 at start of period. Then hear playback of all remaining project 4. Introduce editing techniques for assignment 5 and provide some work time on it – need to specify deadline (start or end of the following week?). Test 1 during final 45 minutes of period – students who complete test early may work on #5.

Quiz 2 due Wednesday. Announced test of next Wednesday, November 5.Heard some assignment 3 examples – need to hear remaining on Wednesday. Collected and reviewed quiz 2 in prep for test on 2/19. Introduced the basics of the Track mixer, gave an overview of plug-in synth modules. Work time on next project.

Tuesday 10/28

Primarily work time on project 5 which is due at the start of the period next class. Mentioned that it is possible to bring in audio samples from instruments besides the NN19, the Dr. Rex sounds for example. (Still need to give an introduction/overview on the CV mixer/merger. Still need to do an organized presentation on the NNXT.)
