Winter 2020

(PLAN)

Monday 1/20

No Class MLK Day holiday

Wednesday 1/22

Finish listening to assignment #1. Heard all that were finished. With absences and perhaps one missing assignment I heard all but four. May want to double check with those who don’t have a great assigned when we meet for next class.

Introduced some Logic concepts/tools: Global tracks, new tracks (three ways, including with same instrument), editing velocity, how to use “same instrument” tracks with drum parts.

Went over the requirements for assignment 2, and class started working on it. Made it due at next class, but also told them that the session after that would be OK, too.

Class will need perhaps half of next class or possibly a bit more to complete assignment #2, which is due at that session. (I told them that the “second pass” would likely be on Wednesday that week.)

(Last week notes: Did not cover:: replace button, mutes and solos…)

Did the first electronic music history subject and assigned quiz #1 as due one week from today. Many were finishing the project #2, but some were not, so I provided a lot of work time and heard some projects today. Held off introducing any new Logic techniques, saving for the next session.

May want to do the first history subject very soon, giving more time to get through both of them and the quizzes before the first test, which should be in week 6.

STILL NEED TO show to create an automated master volume fader on the mixer with a control track in the main window. (or an alternative available in the new version of Logic?)

Winter 2019

Monday 1/21

No Class MLK Day holiday

Wednesday 1/23

Introduced use of multiple drum tracks with the same “inst” (or instrument) part, and how to use velocity to alter the “intensity” of the sound of each instrument. Looked at Global Tracks. Reminded class that assignment #2 is due at next class, and provided a bit of work time on this project.

Class will need perhaps half of next class to complete assignment #2, which is due at that session. (I told them that the “second pass” would likely be on Wednesday that week.)

Spring 2017

Monday 4/24

Introduced use of multiple drum tracks with the same “inst” (or instrument) part, and how to use velocity to alter the “intensity” of the sound of each instrument. Reminded class that assignment #2 is due at next class, and provided significant work time on this project.

(Last week notes: Did not cover:: replace button, mutes and solos…)

Tuesday 4/25

Work time on #2. Continue with Subtractor, especially to modulation. And, then, this was the Big Scary FM Numbers session today. It was somewhat heavy going for a few students, and I should review this on Thursday and probably have them work some numbers to remind themselves how to figure it out. Mentioned the effect of using waveforms that are not sine waves, but did not mention what happens if the oscillators are not on the same frequencies, for example using 2:1 frequency ratios to produce a harmonic sidebands series with only odd-numbered harmonics.

Wednesday 4/26

Did the first electronic music history subject and assigned quiz #1 as due one week from today. Many were finishing the project #2, but some were not, so I provided a lot of work time and heard some projects today. Held off introducing any new Logic techniques, saving for the next session.

May want to do the first history subject today, giving more time to get through both of them and the quizzes before the first test, which should be in week 6. Showed how to create an automated master volume fader on the mixer with a control track in the main window.

Thursday 4/27

Did the final new material on the Subtractor — the “odds and ends,” including keyboard control of filter frequency,  mapping velocity to various things, polyphony, legato/retrigger, mod/bend wheels, etc. Began introduction of the NN19 and NNXT. Lots of (final) work time on the Subtractor assignment. Collected/reviewed quiz #1, reminded about due date for quiz #2.

Winter 2017

Monday 1/23

Playing catch-up a bit today, given last week’s holiday. Went over the three ways to reuse a region: copy, loop, and alias. Also looked briefly at Snap. Starting listening to #1 — began in the row by the door and got through two rows. Mentioned that I would use every lab section of the class on Wednesday to make faster progress. Showed the class assignment #2 at the website.

Did not do: Quantizing individual notes in a region. Splitting a part across multiple traces with the same instrument. Swing quantizing and quantizing strength in the region editor.  Editing velocity? mutes and solos?

Tuesday 1/24

Not this quarter

Wednesday 1/25

Finished hearing the Garage Band project. Demonstrated how to split a part (e.g. drums) across multiple tracks with the same instrument. Showed how to edit velocity. Showed access to the cursor tools — mainly so that I could demonstrate the velocity tool. Showed how to create an automated master volume fader on the mixer with a control track in the main window.

Took the entire period to finish auditioning the garage band projects! Reminded about due date for #2.

Did not do: some of the editing options in the track edit window, such as displaying and editing velocity or pitch bend. More on the mixer?

Do the first electronic music history presentation next week?

32 enrolled today and as of census day on Monday this week. A couple may no longer be actively attending.

Thursday 1/26

Not this quarter

Fall 2016

Monday 10/10

Explained the three ways to reuse events in a region — loop, copy, and alias — and the circumstances in which each is used. Looked at splitting a part across multiple traces with the same instrument. Heard the rest of the Garage Band projects. At the end of the period, perhaps only 1/4 of class was finished with #2, so we’ll need work time on Wednesday before playing it back.

Did not do: Region transpose and velocity adjustments. Quantizing individual notes in a region. Swing quantizing and quantizing strength in the region editor.  Editing velocity? mutes and solos? Work time continued on #2, which is due at the start of the period on Wednesday. Perhaps need to explicitly note that #3 is due in one week from Wednesday.

Tuesday 10/11

Not this quarter

Wednesday 10/12

Work time on #2, then hear as many as possible. Went over some small issues — the various tools (pointer, pencil, etc) in Logic, the three track displays (piano roll, score, and step editor), some of the editing options in the track edit window, such as displaying and editing velocity or pitch bend. Did a complete first pass on assignment #2. Need to do the second pass next Monday. At the very end of the period I did a very quick and not very detailed introduction to automation in Logic: Basically where to find the button to turn it on and off, and how to do the things we did in Garage Band.

Announced #3 due date as next Wednesday, but noted that it may end up being delayed if necessary.

Do the first electronic music history presentation next week?

DID NOT DO THE FOLLOWING: Logic mixer, including how to set up a master fader automation track.

31 enrolled today and as of census day on Monday this week. May have 2 absent students, including one that appears to not be returning.

Thursday 10/13

Not this quarter

Winter 2016

Monday 4/18

Explained the three ways to reuse events in a region — loop, copy, and alias — and the circumstances in which each is used. Region transpose and velocity adjustments. Quantizing individual notes in a region. Swing quantizing and quantizing strength in the region editor. Heard the rest of the Garage Band projects. Explained and assigned #2, which is due in about a week. Editing velocity? mutes and solos? Went ahead and did a quick overview of the three ways to reuse a region: loop, option-drag, alias (option-shift-drag). 26 attended today. Work time continued on #2, which is due at the start of the period on next Monday, 4/25.

Tuesday 4/19

Plan: Work time #2. Changed due date on #2 to next Tuesday. Take home quiz #1 reminder. Finish filter basics. ADSR/Envelope generators. Very basic intro to modulation using LFO 2 only, for vibrato, but no more today. Next session is the heavy duty FM coverage, plus quiz #1 is due, and must assign quiz #2.

Wednesday 4/20

(From previous Monday report…)

Went ahead and explained how to split the drum parts across multiple tracks, even though that is part of assignment #3, which has not yet been assigned. Renaming tracks and regions, popup menu tools, Snap, etc. Lecture topics are getting ahead of assignment schedule, so do the first electronic music history presentation next week.

Did a few small “preview” topics, including a tiny glimpse at automation.

DID NOT DO THE FOLLOWING: Did an introduction to automation in Logic, and looked at the Logic mixer, including how to set up a master fader automation track.

30 enrolled today and as of census day on Monday this week. May have had four absent students but did not record attendance.

Thursday 4/21

Frequency modulation using two audio oscillators on the Subtractor. Did the whole thing, and assigned quiz #2 for one week from today. Collected and reviewed quiz #1. Next time I may want to go back and demonstrate some interesting sounds produced via FM.

Double check to see if you heard all assignment #1 last week!? Listen to those remaining when checking assignment #2.

Friday 4/22

Not this quarter.

Fall 2015

Monday 10/5

Heard the rest of the Garage Band projects. Explained and assigned #2, which is due in about a week. Went ahead and explained how to split the drum parts across multiple tracks, even though that is part of assignment #3, which has not yet been assigned.  Went ahead and did a quick overview of the three ways to reuse a region: loop, option-drag, alias (option-shift-drag). 30 attended today.

Tuesday 10/6

Not this quarter.

Wednesday 10/7

Work time on #2 throughout the period.  Did an introduction to automation in Logic, and looked at the Logic mixer, including how to set up a master fader automation track. Next time: Check to see if anything else needs to be presented in order to do #3. Also went over how to rename tracks and regions (and why!) in Logic. We are probably running a bit ahead of schedule (!) so perhaps do the first electronic music history topic very soon?

29 enrolled today and as of census day on Monday this week. May have had two absent students but did not record attendance.

Thursday 10/8

Not this quarter.

Friday 10/9

(this class section not offered every quarter)

SPRING 2015

Monday 4/20

Heard the rest of the Garage Band projects. Explained and assigned #2, which is due in about a week. Went ahead and explained how to split the drum parts across multiple tracks, even though that is part of assignment #3, which has not yet been assigned. Had one absence today, one excused absence, plus confirmed that one student who has not been attending has dropped on his own. 28 were enrolled, but it will likely be 27 on the census roster. 25 attended today.

Tuesday 4/21

Heard the remainder of the Redrum assignments. Continued with the Subtractor. Continued the ADSR control over the filters and basic LFO use. Did not start the FM topic including modulation of two audio oscillators and FM synthesis. Announced due date for quiz #1 as one week from today.

As of yesterday’s census date, there were 26 students register in the class.

Wednesday 4/22

Work time on #2 throughout the period. Went over the three ways to re-use a region: copy, loop, alias. (Used only the option-shift-drag method for creating aliases.) Did a very brief introduction to automation in Logic — just enough to see where to automate volume and pan.

Next time: Check to see if anything else needs to be presented in order to do #3. We are probably running a bit ahead of schedule (!) so perhaps do the first electronic music history topic very soon?

28 enrolled today and as of census day on Monday this week. Attendance was poor today. Only 21 present, plus two who contacted me about their absences.

Thursday 4/23

Introduced the FM subject and sidebands. Did not quite finish the Subtractor presentation today, aside from FM, and there might be few odds and ends yet — but time to move on . Delayed the due date for #2 until the end of the next Tuesday class and will likely have to delay #3 as a consequence as it is already listed on the website.

26 enrolled, 23 present today.

Friday

(this class section not offered every quarter)

WINTER 2015

Monday 1/19

No class meeting — ML King Holiday

Tuesday 1/20

Heard the remainder of the Redrum assignments. Continued with the Subtractor. Continued the introduction to filters and introduced the harmonic series on oscillator waveforms and their use with the filters, including resonance. Since today was heavy on theory, next time will probably want to devote larger portion of period to lab work.

Did not yet announce quiz #1 on harmonics – should do this at next class after press on harmonics.

Wednesday 1/21

Finished hearing assignment #1. Work time on #2. Spoke about a few odds and ends that came up during review of assignment #1. Decided to hold off on hearing #2 until next Wednesday as per option listed on assignment deadline. Next up: automation in Logic?

Thursday 1/22

Work time on #2. Announced correct due date for #2 (next Thursday) and quiz #1 (also next Thursday). Went over using the filter envelope. Introduced LFO and basic modulation and hinted at other modulation types (with two oscillators). Did not do the sideband lecture yet nor demonstrate at all how to modulate with to regular oscillators, nor assign the sideband quiz. Save that for Tuesday.

Friday

(this class section not offered every quarter)

SPRING 2014

Monday 4/21

Heard all remaining Garage Band assignments. Introduced to techniques/issues for assignment #3: splitting an “instrument” part across multiple tracks, an overview of the three ways to reuse events in a region. Work time on project #2. Only one or two were finished with #2 at end of period, so on Wednesday the class will need significant (30+ minutes?) work time on #2 in addition to any new material. (And new material may not be needed, since both techniques needed for assignment #3 were covered today. DO go over the assignment #3 requirements and DO set and edit the due date.)

Tuesday 4/22

Continued with the Subtractor. Began with introduction to the ADSR for amplitude, plus the general concept of the envelope generator. Heard the remainder of the Redrum assignments.  Did a very basic introduction to filters but did not yet go over harmonics—save that for next session. Did consider the effect of the resonance low pass filter and its relationship to vowel sounds, but did not use this terminology and did not yet talk about harmonics. That is for next time.

Did not yet announce quiz #1 on harmonics – should do this at next class after press on harmonics. Completed the basics of using LFOs for modulation. This leaves next time for coverage of frequency modulation using two audio oscillators. Heard remaining assignment #2 (redrum) with two students who were not ready and were told that they will need to tell me when they are finished.

Wednesday 4/23

First hour of class was work time on #2. No more than half the class was finished, so I will wait until the next class to hear this work. Went ahead and started demonstration of automation in Logic, then left some additional work time at the end of the period.

Thursday 4/24

Covered harmonics, waveforms, and their relationship to timbre and filtering in class today. Assigned quiz #1 as due one week from today. Then work time on the Subtractor. Near the end of the class I reviewed the goals of assignment #2 and then briefly introduced the use of the filter envelope.

For later: Initial FM presentation: the concept of FM and various ways to create it and manipulate it using LFO1 and LFO2. Assigned quiz #1 as due one week from today. Very briefly revealed the existence of the mixer in Reason. Heard the Redrum assignment…

Friday 1/2

(this class section not offered every quarter)

Winter 2014

Monday 1/20 – No Monday class – holiday.

Tuesday 1/21 – Continued with the Subtractor. Finished (aside from things like modulation) the oscillators and the noise generator. Went over the filters and introduced filter frequency, resonance, and the four filter types. Did a quick introduction to using the filter ADSR, though might review this next time. Announced that I will not hear Redrum assignments until next class. Work time on Redrum assignment or, for those who are finished, time to work with the Subtractor. Announced deadline for #3.

Did not yet announce quiz #1 on harmonics – should do this at next class. Completed the basics of using LFOs for modulation. This leaves next time for coverage of frequency modulation using two audio oscillators. Heard remaining assignment #2 (redrum) with two students who were not ready and were told that they will need to tell me when they are finished.

Wednesday 1/22 – Went over method for recording drum parts on multiple channels. Assigned #2, with vague due date. Heard about 2/3 of garage band assignments – starting by door, heard rows 1-4. Did not hear 5-6.

OLD: Delete –> Went over three methods of reusing a region: loops, option-drag (copy-paste), and the alias. Presented musical situations in which each might most appropriately be chosen. Introduced the method for splitting a drum part using a single instrument across multiple tracks, along with some explanations of why this might be useful. This was the final day to work (officially) on assignment #2 during class time, as it is due at the start of next Monday’s class. I mentioned briefly that assignment #3 will be due on the Monday after that (May 6), but should probably remind next week.

Thursday 1/23 – Initial FM presentation: the concept of FM and various ways to create it and manipulate it using LFO1 and LFO2. Assigned quiz #1 as due one week from today. Very briefly revealed the existence of the mixer in Reason. Heard the Redrum assignment…

… but did not get to all of them. Heard rows 6, 5, 4, and 3 and Vulpe from row 2. Next class, hear the rest in rows 1 and 2, and then hear those who were not ready today.

There was some additional work time on #3, which is due soon. Class was reminded about the due date for the first take home quiz next Thursday. Next topic is likely FM with two audio oscillators

Friday 1/25 (this class section not offered every quarter)

Spring 2013

Monday 4/22 – Because the class is so large – still 33 enrolled and 31 present – it took almost all period to complete playback of assignment #1. Did introduce Logic Basics instruments: ES1, EXS24, and Ultrabeat. Changed deadline of next assignment to START of Monday one week from today. Next class, being covering other topics required for assignment 3 and provide some work time on #2.

Tuesday 4/23 – Announced due date for quiz #1 on harmonics – one week from today on April 30. Completed the basics of using LFOs for modulation. This leaves next time for coverage of frequency modulation using two audio oscillators. Heard remaining assignment #2 (redrum) with two students who were not ready and were told that they will need to tell me when they are finished.

Wednesday 4/24 – Went over three methods of reusing a region: loops, option-drag (copy-paste), and the alias.

Dropped one student after second unexcused absence today. 32 are now registered, and 31 were present in class today.

Thursday 4/25 – Pretty much completed the presentation on FM, going through its use with two audio oscillators in cases where both are tracking the keyboard and when only one is tracking. We calculated sideband frequencies for various combinations of frequencies and dealt with the issue of negative frequencies. Amplitude of sidebands was handled in a very general way. Terms and concepts introduced included: clangorous, harmonic, partial, sideband, non-harmonic (enharmonic?), etc.

There was some additional work time on #3, which is due at the next class. Class was reminded about the due date for the first take home quiz next Tuesday.

Friday 1/25 (this class section not offered every quarter) – Class was modified due to instructor illness. Class was almost entirely devoted to work time on projects. Briefly introduced three topics that are necessary for doing assignment #3: splitting an instrument across multiple tracks, Logic basics instruments, and three methods of reusing material in a region. Was unable to review the few remaining Garage Band assignments nor assignment #2 – will do this at the START of the period next week. Assigned #3 as due at the end of next class session.

Winter 2013

Monday 1/21 – Holiday

Tuesday 1/22 – Class cancelled – instructor ill.

Wednesday 1/23 – Instructor ill – but class met for work time on Assignment 2, first Logic assignment. Quickly reviewed using Apple Loops” in Logic. Quick look at Logic Basics Instruments. Did not hear Garage Band assignments. That will have to happen next Monday. (Acknowledged that Monday holiday and my Wednesday illness will probably delay assignment 2, since otherwise I would have to hear it and assignment 1 both on Monday.)

Thursday 1/24 – Due to instructor Tuesday absence we are now behind. (Still ill today, but met class.) Continued with the Subtractor, looking at filters and the envelopes controlling filters and amplitude. Assigned first quiz as due one week from today. Mentioned that assignment 3 will be due at the same session. Put off listening to assignment #2 (redrum) until next Tuesday.(OLD: Finished the complex intro to FM, first with LFO and then with a second oscillator. Introduced sidebands, both with non-harmonic and harmonic oscillator frequencies. Covered a few odds and ends on the Subtractor: portamento, mapping velocity, polyphony. Basically finished with the Subtractor. Did NOT hear any of the Subtractor assignments, but will hear all of them at the next class. Reminded that the first quiz is due next Tuesday, and announced that the second quiz is due exactly one week later.)

Friday 1/25 – Class was modified due to instructor illness.

2012 Spring

Monday 4/23 – Heard all “first round” Garage Band assignments, but need to hear the “second round” assignments at the Wednesday class. Went over quantizing basics, including how to interpret the fraction settings and a “template” of which to try first. Introduced the “three methods for reusing regions” – loop, copy, and alias. Will almost certainly need to change deadline for #2 from this coming Wednesday until next Monday.Next time: go over the requirements for assignment 2 and announce deadline

Tuesday 4/24 – Heard remaining redrum assignments. (Still need to record them.) Reminded class about some of the features of the next (#3) assignment, and changed to deadline to allow completion this next Thursday or next Tuesday. Began the coverage of modulation. Completed the use of LFOs. Began the use of oscillator 2 as program oscillator  – went over how to set it up with Oscillator 2 as a fixed frequency oscillator, and the possibility of getting Osc 2 to be in the audio range an produce complex timbres. Did NOT get into the details of sidebands nor the use of keyboard control over both oscillators.

Wednesday 4/25 – Introduced the use of Logic Basics instruments, specifically the ES1, EXS24, and Ultrabeat – how to select the plug-in, how to select sounds from the plug-ins, and how to switch among plug-ins. Heard the few remaining Garage Ban (#1) projects. Reviewed the features of assignment #2 (which is really due next Monday, although the original date was today). Introduced the technique for splitting a drum part across multiple tracks Did a brief overview of SOME requirements for #3.DID NOT: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?)

Thursday 1/26 – Finished the complex intro to FM, first with LFO and then with a second oscillator. Reminded that the first quiz is due next Tuesday, and announced that the second quiz is due exactly one week later.

Friday 4/27 – No Friday class this quarter.

2012 Winter

Monday 1/23 – Because of last week’s Monday holiday, this class is a bit behind the Friday class. Additional Logic basics today – very basic use of quantizing. how to use apple loops in Logic. Did the first pass hearing assignment #1. Need to hear remained assignment 1 work at next class.Next time: go over the requirements for assignment 2 and announce deadline

Tuesday 1/24 – Continued with the subtractor. Finished coverage of filters: types, resonance, etc. Covered ADSR modules for volume and for filter. Mentioned the keyboard knob on the filter. Announced assignment 3. Heard a few remaining assignment 2. Work time on Subtractor and and assignment 3.

Wednesday 1/25 – Introduced three ways to re-use material from a region: loop, copy, alias. Reminded that assignment #2 is due soon. Heard all remaining assignment 1. Work time on project 2. IMPORTANT: DID NOT introduce the technique for splitting a drum part across multiple tracks – though this is required for assignment 3!(Did NOT DO a quick intro to using the Logic Basics Instruments – ES1,  Sampler, Ultrabeat. Later next week need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?)

Thursday 1/26 – Did the complex intro to FM, first with LFO and then with a second oscillator. Introduced sidebands, both with non-harmonic and harmonic oscillator frequencies. (Need to assign the two quizzes on FM and harmonics.)

Friday 1/27 – (Did not update this!) Heard remaining Garage Band projects. Work time on #2 with the intention – likely to not be fully realized – of finishing it today. (Explained to class the unavoidable time issue this quarter that forces me to push a bit.) As I write this halfway through the period, it is likely that not all will be ready to play #2 and that I’ll need significant time during second half of period to explain concepts for #3.In fact, hearing #3 near the start of the period next week is the official plan…

2011 Fall

Monday 10/10 – work on Logic assignment (#2). Briefly discussed issues with audio peaks and some very basic ways to deal with them. Did a very basic introduction to quantizing in Logic, showing only how to quantize a region – did not quantize individual notes, and only offered the basic “try this first” approach to selecting quantize values. Demonstrated how to find and add Apple Loops to Logic Projects (for assignment #2).A few GB projects to hear (but no one said they were done. For any remaining, student will need to ask me to hear it.) For project 2: Intro loop browser in Logic. Demonstrated how to use “apple loops” in Logic. Did quantizing basics. Reminded that assignment 2 is due next time and that work time is available during intermediate class on Tuesday.

Tuesday 10/11 – No Music 8 this quarter

Thursday 10/13 – No Music 8 this quarter

Friday 10/14 – Heard remaining Garage Band projects.

2011 Spring

Monday 4/18 – A few GB projects to hear (but no one said they were done. For any remaining, student will need to ask me to hear it.) For project 2: Intro loop browser in Logic. Demonstrated how to use “apple loops” in Logic. Did quantizing basics. Reminded that assignment 2 is due next time and that work time is available during intermediate class on Tuesday.

Tuesday 4/19 – Continued with Subtractor Introduction. Did use of LFO including modulation of frequency – but not yet of filter, and mix, etc. Next? – FM with two audio oscillators including sidebands, generation of harmonic sidebands, effect of keyboard control (or not) of modulator. use of FM to generate diverse harmonic timbres. Hear remaining Redrum assignments.  Need to do a quiz on waveforms, harmonics, FM…

Wednesday 4/20 – Heard the very few remaining Garage Band projects. Introduced three ways to re-use material from a region: loop, copy, alias. Reminded that assignment #2 is due during last half of this class though some may not be ready. Work time on project 2 – which was due at the end of the period but is now due at start of next Monday’s class. Made brief mention of next assignment and (only quickly) described how to spread drums across multiple tracks with the same “inst.”Still need to fully cover the method for spreading a drum part over multiple tracks.Did NOT: Went over selecting sounds from the “Logic Basics” set, and the basic use of ES1, EXS24, and Ultrabeat.Later next week need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?

Thursday 4/21 – Introduced the topic of frequency modulation and sidebands, with all the gory details about calculating sideband frequencies and the rest. Did NOT yet assign the quiz on the topic – perhaps at the NEXT session? Some work time on the Subtractor assignment which is due at the end of the next class meeting. Assigned the first quiz with a due date as listed on the web site. (Assign quiz 2 next time?) (DID NOT:Did a quick once-over regarding remaining controls on the Subtractor such as polyphony, portamento, bend/mod wheels, velocity control. At end of period did a very basic intro to signal processors and back panel “wiring” in Reason. We only looked at how to insert one effect module between the Subtractor and the Mixer.)Next subject is likely to be signal processors. Tentative plan to begin next class with basic intro to some processors in series, then hear remaining projects as others go ahead, and then add more about processors including parallel wiring, mixer send/receive, etc.

Friday 4/22 – none this quarter

2011 Winter

Monday 1/17 – NO CLASS – MLKing Holiday – (Fall 2010: Heard the remaining Garage Band projects. (DID not: Discussed limiting volume to avoid peaks.) Introduced use of Apple loops in Logic. Introduced the methods of spreading a single drum part over multiple tracks using one “instrument.” Reviewed “looping” basics – e.g. how to use a blank regions, etc. Assigned #2 as due this coming Monday at start of period. )

Tuesday 1/18 – Continued with Subtractor Introduction. Concluded use of LFO including modulation of frequency, filter, and mix. Reviewed over the concept of harmonics, from guitar string to the four synthesizer waveforms. Went to FM with two audio oscillators and covered the basics of this including sidebands, generation of harmonic sidebands, effect of keyboard control (or not) of modulator. use of FM to generate diverse harmonic timbres. Announced #3 for end of next period.  Need to do a quiz on waveforms, harmonics, FM…

Wednesday 1/19 – Heard the very few remaining Garage Band projects. Announced assignment #2 as due during last half of next class. Demonstrated how to use “apple loops” in Logic. Went over quantizing in Logic – both to quantize entire regions and to quantize individual notes in the piano roll. Portions of period were work time on project 2 – which is due at the middle of the period on Monday.

Still need to go over the method for spreading a drum part over multiple tracks. Need to do “copy, loop, and alias” session.

Did NOT: Went over selecting sounds from the “Logic Basics” set, and the basic use of ES1, EXS24, and Ultrabeat.

Later next week need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?

Thursday 1/20 – Most of  time in the period was work time on the Subtractor assignment which was due at the end of the period today – but a majority of the class had not quite finished, so I’ll hear it 15 MINUTES AFTER THE START OF NEXT TUESDAY’S SESSION. Assigned the first quiz with a due date of one week from today. (Assign quiz 2 next time?) Did a quick once-over regarding remaining controls on the Subtractor such as polyphony, portamento, bend/mod wheels, velocity control. At end of period did a very basic intro to signal processors and back panel “wiring” in Reason. We only looked at how to insert one effect module between the Subtractor and the Mixer.

Next subject is likely to be signal processors. Tentative plan to begin next class with basic intro to some processors in series, then hear remaining projects as others go ahead, and then add more about processors including parallel wiring, mixer send/receive, etc.

Friday 1/21 – Heard a few remaining Garage Band assignments. Essentially the same as MW class, but…  heard some but not all of assignment #2. Need to hear the remaining #2 projects at the start of the period next week. The period will also need to include work time on #3 – it was assigned this week but there was NO time to work on it.Main new stuff was

  • Spliting a part across multiple tracks
  • Loop, option-drag, and alias, and
  • Using apple loops
  • Logic Basics instruments (EXS24, ES1, Ultrabeat)

For next time

  • EM history 1!
  • volume/pan automation.
  • effects/inserts
  • next assignment
  • first quiz

Assignment 3 next week – no earlier than middle of period since we had almost no time to work on it this week.

2010 Fall

Monday 10/4 – Heard the remaining Garage Band projects.

Tuesday 10/5 – Continued with Subtractor Introduction. Concluded use of LFO including modulation of frequency, filter, and mix. Went over the concept of harmonics, from guitar string to the four synthesizer waveforms. (DID NOT – SAVE FOR NEXT TIME: Went to FM with two audio oscillators and covered the basics of this including sidebands, generation of harmonic sidebands, effect of keyboard control (or not) of modulator. use of FM to generate diverse harmonic timbres.) Went over selecting sounds from the “Logic Basics” set, and the basic use of ES1, EXS24, and Ultrabeat. Also described three methods of “reusing” a region in Logic: loop, copy (and edit?), alias. Some may have finished assignment 2 today and started #3.

On Monday need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader.

Thursday 10/7 – This is was the “tough sledding” session – going over how FM works when using two audio oscillators and, in particular, trying to make sense out of sidebands. We went over how to calculate them in some simple situations. Most of remaining time in the period was work time on the Subtractor assignment which was due at the end of the period today. Heard about half of these assignments and need to hear the remaining projects at the next class meeting. (May still want to do: All filled in a few details about various controls that we had not already covered in the subtractor: pitch bend, modulation, portamento, the velocity controls, etc.) Need to distribute the harmonics/sidebands quiz, perhaps as two separate quizzes.

Next subject is likely to be signal processors. Tentative plan to begin next class with basic intro to some processors in series, then hear remaining projects as others go ahead, and then add more about processors including parallel wiring, mixer send/receive, etc. Need to consider class topics and to do a quiz.

Friday 10/8 – Heard a few remaining Garage Band assignments. Essentially the same as MW class.  Main new stuff was

  • Using apple loops
  • Logic Basics instruments (EXS24, ES1, Ultrabeat)
  • Perhaps start automation?

Did not do EM history 1. Assignment 3 and 2 are next week.

2010 Fall

Monday 10/5 – Including Audio/Real instrument loops in Logic – brief explanation. Did a very basic description (but only using the “+” button) of how to split a part across tracks – NEED TO COVER HOW TO USE THE SAME INSTRUMENT PART FOR THIS… Also covered how to split a part across multiple tracks and some of the situations in which one might do this.

Briefly mentioned that the above techniques would be used in assignment #2 but did not cover assignment details nor the due date.

DID NOT COVER the three ways to re-use a region in logic: option-drag, loop, and alias.

Heard SOME Garageband (#1) assignments from rows 1, 2, and 3. Next time need to hear rows 4, 5, and 6 – and anyone who “took a pass.”

Tuesday 10/6 – Since deadline of assignment #2 was delayed until today, heard project #2 at start of class. Finished the main features of the Subtractor including LFOs and a few odds and ends…BUT did not yet explain frequency modulation between two audio oscillators – need to do this on Thursday. Work time on assignment 3 (five Subtractor synth sounds).

Wednesday 10/7 – Portions of period were work time on project 2 – which is due at the on Monday. Went over hte three ways to reuse regions: loop, copy, alias. DID NOT: Introduced track automation including creating a master volume fader.

Thursday 10/8 – Introduced frequency modulation synthesis using the two Subtractor oscillators, and explained the concept of sidebands – this took more than half of the period. Then a work day on Assignment 3 (five subtractors). (Next time probably need to introduce use of inline effects)

Friday 10/9 – Same as MW class but possibly a bit ahead of them.  Main new stuff was spreading a part across multiple tracks and loop, option-drag, and alias, and volume/pan automation. Heard assignment 2.
