2020 Winter

First week enrollment notes

Approximately 27-29 students present at first meeting, with a few enrolled students absent. At second meeting 1 dropped two students, there was on self-drop, and one student added.

Monday 1/6

Did the usual getting-started stuff: quick review of syllabus, etc. Began with Garage Band: selecting and dragging loops into tracks; option-drag, drag to make loops, delete region and track, basic automation, mutes and solos.

Wednesday 1/9

Did everything else in Garage Band: using keyboard, selecting instruments, how drum parts work, using click track, basic track editing, basic quantizing, and a very minimal intro to signal processing/effects. Assignment 1 due date announced.

Did NOT yet do grade access code creation.

At next class students will need substantial work time on this assignment, along with the introduction to Logic.

2019 Winter

First week enrollment notes

27 students present at second meeting, with a few enrolled students absent

Monday 1/7

Did the usual getting-started stuff: quick review of syllabus, etc. Began with Garage Band: selecting and dragging loops into tracks; option-drag, drag to make loops, delete region and track

Wednesday 1/9

Did everything else in Garage Band (except audio recording and editing, aside from basic quantizing adjustments — may want to show how to manually move/edit notes?.) Assignment 1 due date announced. Also had students submit grade access codes during class.

At next class students will need substantial work time on this assignment, along with the introduction to Logic.

2017 Spring

First week enrollment notes

First class numbers are incorporated into daily notes below. After end-of-week roster cleanup:

  • 4/10: Music 51 enrollment had been listed as 30 plus 2 on wait list. At first class meeting there was one no-show (who was dropped), two absent students who corresponded with me about missing the first class, one wait-listed student who to class. 29 students were present (28 pre-enrolled plus one added) student. This puts official enrollment at 31, with the expectation that at least one student is likely to drop.
  • 4/11: Music 8 had 22 officially enrolled students at the start of the first session. 1 absent student contacted me by email to report that she would attend on Thursday. 1 student was absent but did not contact me, 1 additional student came and asked to add, and 1 registered student dropped due to a schedule conflict.  It appears that 21 students are active in the class and enrolled as of 4/11/17.)
  • 4/12: 30 students attended the second Music 51 class on Wednesday. One wait-listed student came to this meeting and was added. One student who had attended on Monday was absent. This means that 32 students appear to be actively enrolled on this date, though at this point 30-31 of them look to be solid enrollees.
  • 4/13: Music 8. 22 students were in attendance today. Will drop one other as a no-show today.

Monday 4/10

Did the usual getting-started stuff: quick review of syllabus, etc. Began with Garage Band: selecting and dragging loops into tracks; option-drag, drag to make loops, delete region and trackbasic look at automation, changing tempo, etc. . Did not cover align to beat, very basic look at “region” editing, keyboard…

Tuesday 4/11

Following the usual administrative stuff, introduced the Reason application. We opened the demo file, closed it and created an empty rack, removed unneeded modules, and added a redeem. Created redrum patterns. Changed pattern length, made multiple patterns, switched to different kits, saw where to change tempo, added new sounds to kits, used two kits at once.

Wednesday 4/12

Did everything else in Garage Band (except audio recording and editing.) Assignment 1 due date announced. Also had students submit grade access codes during class.

At next class students will need substantial work time on this assignment, along with the introduction to Logic.

Thursday 4/13

Finished ReDrum including multiple ReDrums, altering/randomizing/copying/pasting patterns/drums, creating a “song,” turning patterns to notes in tracks, playing ReDrum from the keyboard, and more. Went over the first assignment — due next week — and allowed about 25 minutes work time on it. Near the end of the period started a very basic intro to the Subtractor… but encountered keyboard problems and suspended it until next session.

2017 Winter

First week enrollment notes

  • Music 51 enrollment had been listed as 30 plus 6 on wait list, but the day before it changed to 29 plus 6 on wait list.

  • I contacted no-shows by email right after the first class but cannot report any further news as of this writing later on day one of the term. Update on evening on day one: One student did contact me to report a job-related conflict on the first day, and he will be attending on Wednesday.
  • Music 51 lost three students to drops at the second meeting. 4 of 6 on the wait list showed up; 3 did not return. 4 additional students showed up. 1 moved to Music 8 and 1 more may do so on Thursday. Students were added to get back to 30 enrolled, with about 5 remaining on the wait list.
  • Music 8 had 20 officially enrolled students plus two who needed waivers to add. (Originally three others wanted to add by waiver but become frustrated by delays and gave up.(4/7/16)

(Nearly 30 registered and present at first class meeting.)

Wednesday 1/8/14 – Did everything else in Garage Band (except audio recording and editing.) Assignment 1 WILL BE announced with due date as listed on web site ON MONDAY. (Likely due at the following Monday’s class – week 3.)

It will be important to limit Logic coverage on Monday so that work time on the Garage Band project may be maximized. If there isn’t enough time it might be necessary to delay project 1 due date until the following Monday.

ATTENDANCE: Actual attendance was about 30 today. One who missed first class showed up, those who added Monday returned, one new student came and asked to add, and some from Music 8 who were not qualified for that section asked to move to 51.

Friday 1/10/14 (Fall and Winter terms only) – No Friday class this quarter.

(25 students of 30 registered present at first class meeting.)

It will be important to limit Logic coverage on Monday so that work time on the Garage Band project may be maximized. If there isn’t enough time it might be necessary to delay project 1 due date until the following Monday.

ATTENDANCE: Actual attendance was about 36 today. Two registered students who missed first class showed up today and wanted to be in the class, but I had to tell them they were dropped as no shows since I had already added others in their place. One student from Music 8 had to be added to this class, and two who had been promised seats on Monday (based on expectation that two students would work on personal laptops) were also added.  Three additional students were told that I could not add them until additional space opens, but that if they come back next week and there is space they will have priority to add. At this point it seems like about 33 are registered.

Thursday 4/11 – (Actual attendance seems to be 20 today – several registered students not present at start of class.)

Finished redrum intro. Assigned due date for this assignment (#2) and spoke to class about what we do with #1.
