2020 Winter

Monday 2/24

Heard remaining #3 assignments. Highest priority is completing #4 today (and possibly hearing some) or getting close enough to play it back on Wednesday. One person finished #4 but I did not start listening to them. Reviewed requirements for assignment #5, the sound editing assignment: how/where to save instruments, the importance of keeping a patch log, need to be able to explain/describe how the sounds were created.  Did an intro to SampleSwap — got class signed up and showed how to navigate and download, with the intent to do more with samples next time. (NOTE: Paul discovered that the download-linked-file method downloads only a .jpg. Need to use the cart feature to get original file types. Explain on Wednesday.)

Wednesday 2/26

Introduced audio editing techniques in Logic — only basics! Various ways of synchronizing beat-based samples to one another and to the project tempo. Took a quick look at the audio editor, briefly introducing the interface and normalize, fade in, fade out, trim, and reverse. Demonstrated how to extract a small clip from a larger sample and save as a separate file. Work time on #4 and did a first pass listening to this project.

Change of plan regarding remaining quizzes. Need to assign quiz #4 on Monday, 3/2, with due date one week later. Need to revise this quiz. Consider delaying the presentation of quiz #3 material a bit, depending on need for lab time.

2019 Winter

Monday 2/25

Introduced Sampleswap: finding the site, logging in or joining, navigating the archive. Imported audio files into Logic by drag-and-drop and by importing. Used Flex to align an audio file to the beat by stretching or shortening it. Heard remaining #4. (Should do the 3rd EM History lecture on Wednesday OR assign the non-history quiz and do the history lecture later.)

Wednesday 2/27

Third EM history subject with quiz due one week from now on Wednesday, March 6.Work time on #5. A few more details on audio in Logic, including more editing tools — very basic introduction to the waveform editor in “file” mode and the basic “functions” tools plus a very basic intro to the Pitch and Time Machine. Told the class about the week 9 schedule: extra lab time on Monday but none on Wednesday. Did not hear any #5 projects — only about three students were finished. Will do that on Monday 3/4.

2017 Spring

Monday 5/29

Holiday — no class.

(OLD: Heard a few remaining #3 assignments. Started to hear #4. Introduced the sampleswap service and how to sign up and download samples, part 1. Next time: Importing the samples into Logic and synchronizing them to software instrument tracks. Test #1 was not ready to hand back yet — return it on Wednesday. Schedule the next history topic soon)

Tuesday 5/30

Start Rewire — made the audio connection between the Reason mixer and the Reason RW LW connection in the Logic mixer. Then patched individual Reason instruments into audio output channels of the Reason hardware interface — then created separate input channels (channel strips) for each of them in Logic mixer. Also showed how to make the Logic mixer channel be mono or stereo. Reviewed remaining schedule with an eye to being sure that presentation proposals come in on time and to encouraging the class to get both #5 and #6 done before the final two weeks.

Wednesday 5/31

Third EM history subject, with quiz assigned for one week from today. Work time on #5. Perhaps almost half of those present had completed it — but the others said they were not yet “close” to having it done — so I recommended Thursday lab time if possible, plus there will be a bit of time on Monday before we play it back.

Thursday 6/1

Plan: Work time on #5 and on to start #6. Hear #5 by the end of the period. Do the audio half of Rewire. Strong reminder about turning in presentation proposals at the next class session.

2017 Winter

Monday 2/27

Heard a few remaining #3 assignments. Started to hear #4. Introduced the sampleswap service and how to sign up and download samples, part 1. Next time: Importing the samples into Logic and synchronizing them to software instrument tracks.

Test #1 was not ready to hand back yet — return it on Wednesday. Schedule the next history topic soon

OLD: Return test 1 and quiz 2. Review (as in, repeat from students who were absent the day after the election) how to download from Sampleswap. place a sample in Logic, and adjust its timing. Further look at audio editing: the waveform edition window, how to save copies of loops/samples, “functions” including normalize, reverse, fade in, fade out, trim — also how to save a copy of an audio loop/same and how to save a selection. Did an official first pass on #5.

Tuesday 2/28

Not this quarter.

Wednesday 3/1

Returned test #1. (Still need to return a few quiz #2 next time.) Heard #4. Went over the specific details and requirements on #5. Summarized remaining deadlines but did not explicitly mention the deadline for the final project. Demonstrate how to import and edit audio in Logic (for #6). Work on #5. (Next up: third history topic, and also audio editing functions in Logic’s editor.)

Thursday 3/2

Not this quarter.

2016 Fall

Monday 11/14

Return test 1 and quiz 2.

Tuesday 11/15

Not this quarter.

Wednesday 11/16

Heard some remaining #5 projects. Work time on #6. Present third electronic music history topic. (Quiz due in one week.) Review calendar for the rest of the term.

Thursday 11/17

Not this quarter.

2016 Spring

Monday 5/23

Too few were finished with #5. A lot of work time on #5 today, and the bottom line is that those who are not finished and who need more than about 15 minutes to finish should come to the Tuesday class for lab. Introduced and signed students up for SampleSwap and went over the two methods for important audio into Logic and the methods for synchronizing the tempos of samples. Did NOT actually tell them the deadline for #6, which is based on this work.

Three students completed the make-up of test #1, so hand back the tests at the next class session.

Tuesday 5/24

Moved to the next stop with Rewire, demonstrating how to patch multiple separate Reason audio sources into the audio connections on the hardware interface and then bring them separately into the Logic mixer. I offered a basic “follow these steps” procedure to create two tracks in Reason alone, quit Reason and then Launch Logic and Reason, wire the Reason sources into the hardware interface, and then bring the inputs into the Logic mixer. Overall, the class was catching on, but this is still perplexing a number of them.

We also realized that almost no one had yet finished #5, and that more time should have been allocated to that assignment at today’s class. With that in mind, the primary objective at Thursday’s class will be to finish #5 and assess it. As far as next steps in Rewire go, we may move on to using external MIDI instrument channels in Logic on Thursday, or we might simply go back through a streamlined version of the multiple Reason audio channels patched to Logic.

Remind Thursday’s class that the proposals are due at the following class meeting.

Wednesday 5/25

Plan: Heard #5. Outlined #6 and work time on #6 and specified deadline. Go over upcoming dates.

Hoped to do the third EM subject with quiz #3 due date for Monday, June 6. That did not happen, so the two options are: 1) do this on Wednesday, June 3 and keep the deadline the same, or 2) switch the two last assignments, with #4 due before #3, or 3) have the periods overlap — do the two presentations on successive class sessions (rather than a week apart) and have them due only one day apart.

Thursday 5/26

90 minutes of class was work time on #5, with a lot of consulting/questions. I reminded the class of next Tuesday’s deadline for turning in presentation proposals and reviewed what a good proposal looks like. At the end of the period, to generalize, 1/3 had finished #5, 1/2 were very close to being finished, and a couple may need more time. I told them that I will hear it at the start of the next class. Next week’s focus is on #6 and finishing it by Thursday so that we can then have the final two weeks to work on the final project (and do class presentations).

2016 Winter

Monday 2/22

Second pass to hear #4. Work time on #5. Began the presentation of topics for assignment #6. Went to sampleswap website, explained it, showed how to download. Then demonstrated simple methods of bringing saved audio files into Logic tracks.

Most not done with #5 at end of period. Expect to start checking #5 partway through period on Wednesday, with likelihood that some may actually play back the following Monday. Consider doing the next EM history topic soon — as soon as this Wednesday?

Tuesday 2/23

Not this quarter

Wednesday 2/24

Work time to complete #5 and start #6. Hear #5. Very basic audio editing in Logic — little more than pointing to the audio editor and briefly summarizing its most basic features.

Thursday 2/25

Not this quarter.

2015 Fall

Monday 11/9

Holiday

Tuesday 11/10

Not this quarter

Wednesday 11/11

Continue work on #5. Return and quickly review test #1. Introduce Sampleswap.org and the insertion of audio loops into Logic. Only two were finished with #5, so remainder of time at end of term was for this. ANNOUNCED that I would hear #5 at START of class on Monday. Went over the outline of the calendar for the rest of the term.

Thursday 11/12

Not this quarter.

Friday 11/13

2015 Spring

Monday 5/25

Memorial Day Holiday

Tuesday 5/26

Reminder about remaining schedule, including posted prospective due dates for #5 and #6. Also about presentation proposals — remind class of this on Thursday. Heard a few more #4 projects. Did the very basic intro to rewire: what it is, what it does, how to set it up so that the full output of Reason’s mixer shows up on a mixer channel in Logic.

Wednesday 5/27

Work on #5. Perhaps five or six students were finished. (I suggested that they try to finish today, but that if they had perhaps 15 minutes of work to go they would have time at the start of the next class. If they had more than that much left to do, it would be a great idea to come in on Thursday.) Signed the class up for sampleswap. Went over how to download sounds and store on local computer, how to important sounds into Logic, and how to match their length to bars or locators. This allows some students to continue on and start #6.

Thursday 5/29

PLAN: Hear more of #4. Perhaps hear some #5? Continue with Rewire — how to patch individual instruments from Reason into the Logic Mixer. Went to the external midi track business in the Logic sequencer, adding one track that talked to an instrument in Reason. Likely need to do more with this next time, including how to deal with control signals. Reminder about presentation proposal due date at our next class.

Friday 2/27

(not this term)

2015 Winter

Monday 2/23

Due to my eye issue, I did not do much active teaching at today’s class, and I decided to not audition assignment #4. Reminded class about test on Wednesday, and that I would hear #4 that day. Work time on #5. Went over the process again for setting up 5 instruments (like ES1 instruments) and saving them in student folders. Also introduced a “basic patch” setup for the ES1.

Tuesday 2/24

Did a collaborative exercise about the presentation proposals — groups described their intended proposals to others in the group, the “others” described the proposals they had heard, and I provided some feedback and commentary on the descriptions. Proposals due at next class. Work time  on  #5. Did not get to hear #4 yet — this is now quite overdue and must happen at the next class.

Wednesday 2/25

Returned quiz 2. Took test #1. Some work time. Hear #4.

Thursday 2/26

Next step on Rewire — external MIDI instruments. Presentation proposals due today — review, schedule, and return proposals. (Finally) heard assignment #4. More work time on #5.

Friday 2/27

(not this term)

2014 Spring

Monday 5/26

Memorial Day Holiday (no classes)

Tuesday 5/27

Announced #5. Introduced sample editing, both via Reason’s built-in editor and in Logic’s audio editor. Reminder about need to come up with a presentation topic idea by Thursday for a class activity.  Some small amount of work time on #4 and #5. Auditioned #4—got to everyone but one student, so ask next time if anyone still wants to show their #4 to me.

Wednesday 5/28

Returned test #1. SampleSwap download and signup. Imported audio loops into Logic audio tracks. Used Edit>Time Stretch to match length to the Logic file tempo, and explored the option of simply changing Logic tempo to match the sample. Did not hear #5 even though it was due. Only half were finished, and it was more important to move forward to cover sample downloading, importing, and basic editing for those who WERE finished. Announced to class that I’ll hear it at start of next class, and that if they are not finished with it at the end of today’s class they should come in on Thursday to work on it.

Thursday 5/29

(Neglected to write summary on day of class, so written later from memory. Check grade records, etc.) Did a class discussion in groups and then followed up as a full class that reviewed ideas for class presentations. Went over calendar for remainder of term. Need to move on to rewire next Tuesday.

Friday 5/30

(not this term)

2014 Winter

Monday 2/24

Presented (later than planned) the second electronic music history topic. Quiz on this material due at next class. Returned Quiz #1. Was to hear #4 today, but because I was ill I decided not to visit each workstation. Will hear this on Wednesday.

Tuesday 2/25

Heard remaining #4. Work time on #5, which is due on Thursday. Survey of status on presentation topic selection – groups share their ideas as of this point. Asked class to bring in samples on Thursday for the next subject.

Wednesday 2/26

Collected, reviewed, graded, and returned quiz #2. Reminded class that test #1 is at the next class session. Listened to assignment. Ask once at beginning of period next time whether anyone else needs to play it. Work time on next assignment (#5). Told class (barely) about sampleswap.org and suggested they might bring in some samples for the next project.

Thursday 2/27

Heard some #5 assignments. (Low attendance today, though several contacted me to say that they had the flu.) Reviewed the signal processor to mixer instrument through signal processor connections for #5. Dropped two “useful” hints for students who are ahead of the class: how to record automation for any control in Reason and how to add and edit any sample in Reason. Reminded class that proposal is due next Tuesday.

2012 Spring Monday 5/28

Memorial Day Holiday – campus closed

Tuesday 5/29

Written test #1 (based on the two first quizzes) today. Work time to finish #6, which been listed as “tentatively” due today but really due Thursday. Reminded class about the presentation proposals due date. Posted assignment due date for #7, but have not introduced the techniques for that assignment yet – must do that, and hear #6, on Thursday.

Wednesday 5/30

Work day only with a substitute teacher due to all-day IPBT meeting. (OLD: Reviewed how to download and organize sounds from sampleswap. Went over two methods for importing audio samples into Logic audio tracks, how to synchronize loops to project tempo by changing project tempo or by changing the tempo of the sample. Looked at basic “functions” in the audio waveform editor. Did a brief overview of ways to deal with excessive peak levels in Logic. Did NOT look at the “factory” options yet and did NOT yet hear #5 – almost no one was ready – it will be next time. Did NOT do the third electronic music history topic – perhaps do that next time.)

Thursday 5/31

Went over the workflow assignment 7. Reminder regarding presentation proposals. Work time on #7. Heard some number of #6 assignments – more to hear next time.

Friday 6/1

No Friday class this quarter.

2012 Winter Monday 2/27

Heard #4. Did test #1. Some work time on #5.

Tuesday 2/28

Announced written test (based on quizzes 1 and 2) for next Tuesday’s class. Work time to finish #6. Heard a few remaining #5.

Wednesday 2/29

Reviewed how to download and organize sounds from sampleswap. Did NOT do the third electronic music history topic – perhaps do that next time.

Thursday 3/1

Turned in presentation proposals. During class I read, commented on, and grade them. At the end of the period I returned proposals, approved or with request for revision by next class. Posted the presentation schedule. This was a work day for the class.

Friday 3/2

Heard a small number of remaining #4. Went over some schedule-related issues including a reminder about the final exam session date and announcement of quiz 3 and 4 dates and the fact that they are reversed for the Friday class. Emphasized the need to review quiz 4 in class today and ensure that time with the Logic application is available for those questions requiring use of Logic. Introduced sample use in Logic: downloading from SampleSwap, organizing sample library, adding audio to Logic, beat matching, basic audio editing tools (functions). #6 due next week. Hear #5 this week. Did quick coverage of methods for dealing with peaks in the Logic mixer: manual and automated volume control, defeating an effect, manually controlling effect gain, or automating effect gain.

2011 Fall Monday 11/14

Some work time on #5. About a half dozen are finished and I heard a few of them. Others are not finished and will need some time on Wednesday. Allocate perhaps a half hour with all or part of it at start of period for completion and then hear before period ends. Introduced audio on Logic: downloading from sampleswap. importing into audio tracks in Logic. synchronizing tempi using align to locators or nearest bar. Next time: look at “factory” in logic and some basic audio editing tools.

Tuesday 11/15

No Music 8 this term

Wednesday 11/16

Finished the information on using audio samples in Logic. This time we looked at the “functions,” time/pitch machine, and extracting a small clip from a larger audio source. Went over, in brief, some details from the remaining schedule – including some attention to attendance. on time arrival, and reasons to pick up extra lab time on Fridays. Did NOT do the third electronic music history topic – perhaps do that next time.

Thursday 11/17

No music 8 this term.

Friday 11/18

Fast day – due to surrounding holidays! Heard a few remaining assignment #4. Introduced all of the topic of audio in Logic – except the time/pitch machine. (Did do the functions menu.) Determined that quiz 4 will be due at next session and quiz three at the session after that – did not want to take more lab time for presenting topics this week, so will present the history topic at the next class. Quiz 4 is due a half hour into the period next time – so students who need a half hour to work with the Logic app to answer questions may do so. Announced that assignment #6 is due next class, but there was very little time to work on it – balancing need to have time to finish it with need to have time to work on final project, will determine exactly when to hear it during the next class meeting. Reviewed remaining schedule for the term. (Admin eval took place during first two hours of class. 23 students were present. Most of the observed portion of the class was the lecture/demonstration on obtaining audio samples from sampleswap.org, basic copyright issues around sampling, how to organize sounds in folders, importing audio into Logic, synchronizing different tempo/rhythm samples, basic sample editor techniques. A portion of the observed session also included – some integrated into the “lecture” and some separate – student lab work with the techniques, followed by additional time to apply the techniques, during which I worked one on one with several students and shared some questions and answers with the group.)

2011 Spring Monday 5/23

Work time on #5 and on #6 for those finished with #5. Heard playback of #5 from most students, though need to make the “second pass” on Wednesday. Reminded about the Wednesday test. Logic and Audio: Editing samples, including the Apple Loop editor, then basic explanation of the time and pitch machine and the functions menu including trim, normalize, fades, silence

Tuesday 5/24

Class still needed time to complete #6 so I did not try to hear it – will plan to do so on Thursday. Demonstrated a sample workflow that started with large audio source, used Logic to edit out and same smaller samples, imported edited samples into a Reason sampler. Still need to confirm and announce the deadline for #7 – perhaps also be specific about the need to find audio source material for #7. Probably also time to go over the schedule for the remainder of the term.

Wednesday 5/25

test 1. Heard remaining #5. bouncing. Work time on 6. Reminders about a few upcoming things: assignment #6 in one week, the rough outline of the plan for quizzes and one more test, beginning to think about the final project. This was followed by work time to work on #6. Quick overview of bouncing. Need to do third EM history topic – perhaps next session? (The assignment based on audio is due next Wednesday.)

Thursday 5/26

Collected presentation proposals, read and returned them. Posted the presentation schedule and explained how critical it is to be ready to present on the assigned day – and that there may not be a second chance for students who are not ready when assigned. Did one circuit of the room to hear #6. Only a small percentage had completed it successfully – quite a few thought thought they were done but had forgotten something. Plan to remind them at the next session that I will make one final circuit at the end of the May 31 class. May need to allow for completion of #7 either on June 2 (original date) or one session later. Reviewed the calendar for the rest of the term.

Friday 5/27

Note this term.

2011 Winter Monday 2/21

Presidents Holiday – No Monday classes

Tuesday 2/22

Heard #6 from perhaps half of students in attendance. Announced that others are expected to have them ready for playback no later than 15 minutes into the next class. Reminded class that presentation proposals are due one week from today. Reminded class that Logic/Reason are automatically rewired when doing #7, so it will be necessary to assign an audio track (or tracks) in Logic to the reason NNXT and NN19 playing the samples as the sample instruments are created and edited. Reminded class to find and bring audio samples for assignment #7. Discussed some issues with “hot” volume levels in the Logic mixer: setting levels above 0.0 unnecessarily, turning things up where turning other things down would be a better solution, need to disable or automate the outputs of effects.

Wednesday 2/23

Started with reminders about a few upcoming things: assignment #5 due later today, assignment #6 in one week, the rough outline of the plan for quizzes and one more test, beginning to think about the final project. This was followed by work time to finish assignment #5 and time to start #6. Quick overview of the Media:Bin and of bouncing. Heard #5 during latter part of the period – from all but perhaps a tiny handful of remaining students – ask at the next session who still needs to play it back. Need to do third EM history topic – perhaps next Monday? (The assignment based on audio is due next Wednesday.)

Thursday 2/24

Reviewed workflow for remaining assignment, and posted a brief workflow summary on the web site. Reminded class of due date for presentation proposal at next class meeting. Heard remaining #6. Work time on #7. Mentioned the need to begin planning for the final project.

Friday 2/25

Work time on 5 and 6. Heard 5 from those who hadn’t already showed it. Review/expand the audio file download and editing. Assign quiz 4 (out of order – explain). Mention final project and schedule for remainder of term. (Still need to do the detailed introduction of the final project before the end of next class session.) Review cycle, autopunch, replace, etc. Some have already finished #6! Promised others at least 45 minutes of work time on this project at the next session before playback. Also at next session, MUST introduce final em history topic.

2010 Fall Monday 11/8

Work time on #5 – deadline will be next class on Wednesday. Introduced audio samples: acquiring and downloading from sampleswap, importing into Logic, two methods of beat matching samples. Did not go over the edit features of the waveform editor in Logic: normalize, fade in, fade out, trim, reverse. Quiz due at next class with written test 1 one week from today.

Tuesday 11/9

Heard only four finished #6 assignments. Announced at end of period that students with unfinished projects needed to use open lab today and/or Wednesday to finish, since the project is now due at the start of the period on Thursday. In that the presentation proposal is due on Thursday, we went over individual proposals-in-progress today and I gave feedback and suggestions on them. Did not do the run through of the workflow for converting samples to sampler instruments as needed for the remaining assignment 7 – need to do this still.

Wednesday 11/10

Reviewed quiz 2. Re-announced next Monday’s test. Introduce more audio editing techniques (normalize, fade in/out, silence, reverse, trim). Hear #5. Work time on #6. Need to do third EM history topic – perhaps next Wednesday? (The assignment based on audio is due next Wednesday.)

Thursday 11/11

Collected presentation proposals. Reviewed and returned them, some with request for revision by next Tuesday. Posted schedule based on proposals received. Went over the workflow for doing assignment 7. Work time on #7. Heard additional #6 – though a few were not yet ready still. Too many absences today.

Friday 11/12

Veterans Day Holiday – we’re playing catch-up now! (See previous term for old class activities.)

2010 Spring Monday 5/24

Heard the remain project 5 examples. (Perhaps one or two need to remind me that theirs are not done yet.) Introduced the pitch/time machine and quickly went over the edit features of the waveform editor in Logic: normalize, fade in, fade out, trim, reverse. Did the first written test. Next time I should still go over the exact process for synchronizing two audio samples with different tempi.

Tuesday 5/25

Heard only four finished #6 assignments. Announced at end of period that students with unfinished projects needed to use open lab today and/or Wednesday to finish, since the project is now due at the start of the period on Thursday. In that the presentation proposal is due on Thursday, we went over individual proposals-in-progress today and I gave feedback and suggestions on them. Did not do the run through of the workflow for converting samples to sampler instruments as needed for the remaining assignment 7 – need to do this still.

Wednesday 5/26

Went through the steps to import and synchronize two audio samples with different tempos. Also showed how to save a copy of a section of a sample as a separate file and import it. Need to do second EM history topic – perhaps next Monday? (The assignment based on audio is due next Wednesday.)

Thursday 5/27

Collected presentation proposals. Reviewed and returned them, some with request for revision by next Tuesday. Posted schedule based on proposals received. Went over the workflow for doing assignment 7. Work time on #7. Heard additional #6 – though a few were not yet ready still. Too many absences today.

Friday 5/28

Did the full explanation/review of importing and editing audio into Logic. (Did not necessarily explain all “functions” options – did do normalize, fade in/out, reverse.) Did the third EM history subject and assigned the take-home quiz #3 as being due next Friday. Work time on #6.

2010 Winter Monday 2/22

Introduced more audio editing techniques: normalize, fade in, fade out, trim, reverse. Looked at changing sample length using the Time/Pitch Machine, and by using the automatic feature to match to nearest bar or to markers. Did test 2. Heard assignment 5 from all who were finished – a few were not yet finished.

Tuesday 2/23

Heard #6. Intro’d material for #7

Wednesday 2/24

Did not record notes on this class. Need to do EM history – next time?

Thursday 11/12

Collected presentation proposals. Reviewed and returned them, some with request for revision by next Tuesday. Posted schedule based on proposals received. Working on #7.

Friday 2/26

More or less back on track with the MW class. Introduced how to obtain and import audio files. Editing them to match beats; also looked at normalize, fade in/out, silence. Heard assignment 5. Did third history topic and assigned quiz 3 as due next week. Assignment 6 due next week as well – though was not specific in class about the time at which it is due. Did NOT yet explain final project or announce (revised?) schedule for last class meeting and finals

2009 Fall Monday 11/9

Did the second EM history presentation with quiz 2 due at the start of next class. Some work time on project 6, with deadline set for END of next class. Posted but did not announce remaining quiz/test schedule. On Wed: start with quiz review, then work time on #6, hear #6 at end of period. Ironically, while the Friday class is now going to have to work hard to finish all work this term, the MW class is probably a bit ahead of schedule…

Tuesday 11/10

Work time on #6 which was due today but which I will instead hear at start of session on Thursday. Did a lot of individual troubleshooting on this project today. (Attendance was poor today!) Described final project and explained time line. (There was a question about the quiz we have not yet had.)

Wednesday 11/11

Work time on #6. Though I had originally (and optimistically) thought that it would be done today, now we’ll hear it at start of class on Monday. Also announced TEST for next Monday. Explained how to bounce to MP3. Explained how to deconstruct a large sample (e.g. – a piece of music) into separate samples, import and beat match them. Also on Monday, need to introduce Final Project and prepare for one more history session either next Wednesday (best) or the following Monday.

Thursday 11/12

Did the class survey of “what will your presentation topic be?” with feedback. Heard remaining project 6A. Explained the most basic techniques needed for assignment 7 (e.g. excerpt small sound in Logic) – might want to look briefly at some other editing, etc. possibilities next time (e.g. – pitch mapping, edits in the sampler, overview of changes in Logic such as fades, etc.). Assignment 7 is due on 11/19. Revisions to proposals due on 11/17. Need to post presentation schedule on 11/17 at end of period and then review final project guidelines again.

Friday 11/13

NO CLASS DUE TO HOLIDAY

Monday 2/23

Introduced audio sampling issues. Importing audio files into Logic audio tracks. Synchronizing them to the project by alterning project tempo and/or using Time/Pitch machine. Went over basic “functions” in T/P Machine. Signed up for SampleSwap and downloaded samples. Did NOT hear assignment 5 since 1/3 of class not yet finished. Announced: 1. #5 due at START of class on Wednesay, Wednesday a work day on #6, #6 due next Monday.

Tuesday 2/24

Did the class survey of “what will your presentation topic be?” with feedback. Work time on #6a which is due today. It turned out that only a couple students had finished 6a, so I delayed the deadline to THE START OF CLASS ON THURSDAY with no option for delay. (Some students can play #6 at the same time.) After that on Thursday we will look at how to create, edit, and use samples to build instruments in the NN19 from our own samples.

Wednesday 2/25

Introduced methods to import audio into Logic audio tracks and edit them in the waveform editor: time and pitch machine, normalize, reverse, fade in/out, etc. Signed everyone up for sampleswap and went over how to download audio files. Introduced assignment 6. (Built on earlier audio editing: went over how to select a small audio “bit” from a larger audio file, save it as a separate file, and edit. Need to hear the remaining project 5 examples.)

Thursday 2/26

Hear #6a – some still did not finish. Demo building NN19 instrument from imported/edited samples. Need to deal with looping the samples, etc. next time. Work time on #7.

Friday 2/27

Heard most of the remaining assignment 5 examples. Used much of period for work on assignment 6, after explaining the basics of importing, beat matching, etc. samples in Logic. Returned test #1 and quick reviewed the answers. Announced the reversal of quizzes #3 and #4 and announced that #4 is due next week. Assignment #6 will be due next time, but it is likely that very few will be ready when class starts. Need to do the remain EM history topic next week and assign quiz, announce final project, and announce remaining test and schedule.

Monday 11/10

Veterans Day Holiday – no classes.

Tuesday 11/11

Introduced Rewire: how to start and connect the progams, creating channel strips for input from Reason’s mixer or individual instruments, etc. Announced assignment 6. Delayed – again! – playback of assignment 1 until START of period on Thursday.

Wednesday 11/12

Introduced methods to import audio into Logic audio tracks and edit them in the waveform editor: time and pitch machine, normalize, reverse, fade in/out, etc. Signed everyone up for sampleswap and went over how to download audio files. Introduced assignment 6. (Built on earlier audio editing: went over how to select a small audio “bit” from a larger audio file, save it as a separate file, and edit. Need to hear the remaining project 5 examples.)

Thursday 11/13

Work on Rewire project. Each student described his/her presentation proposal.(Demonstrated how to pipe audio from individual Reason instruments into separate audio tracks in Logic. Some final work time on assignment 6, most of which I heard before the end of class. (But some still to go.) Need to comment on remaining assignment and revised deadline. Provided feedback on project proposals, including requirement that some resubmit revised proposals by next Tuesday.)

Friday 11/14

Heard remaining assignment 5 examples. Used most of period for work on assignment 6. It appears that almost everyone has finished it – announced that I’ll hear it at start of period next time. Did final EM history presentation and assigned quiz 3 for next Friday. Discussed the fact that we have only two more class meetings – and outlined the plan for the remaining sessions. (Finished assignment 5 but did not hear it – will hear this project as the start of the period next week. Did cover the import and basic editing of audio samples including beat matching. Had some work time on #6 – which is now due at the end of the period next week. Did basic em history on RCA, Moog, and Buchla – need to play examples next week.)
