2020 Winter

Monday 3/2

Hear remaining #4 and as many of #5 as possible. Start #6. Remind: schedule, quiz #4 due on next Monday, quiz #3 due two weeks from today. Reviewed how to use on-screen help for quiz #4. Reviewed advanced tools setting and editing the top bar. Did a brief overview of auto punch. Suggested starting pre-work on final project.

Wednesday 3/4

Plan: Third electronic music history lecture. Go over final project requirements.  Work time on #6. Hear any completed #4, #5, and #6 assignments. Review entire remaining schedule — quizzes, project, final exam schedule, etc.

Thursday 6/8

Assess any remaining #5 and #6 projects. Go over the format of the final project. Remind about presentations. Remind about calendar.

2017 Winter

Monday 3/6

Presented the third electronic music history topic and assigned quiz #3 as due one week from today. Outlined the remaining schedule for the quarter. Explained the undo history feature. Heard #4. (Don’t plan to do another round, but some students may still want to play it for me.) Plan to hear #5 starting Wednesday.

Tuesday 3/7

Not this quarter.

Wednesday 3/8

Reviewed assignment #6 and final project requirements and the general outline of the schedule going forward. Reminder that quiz #3 is due at the next class. Took a quick look at audio editing tools in Logic.  Began to hear #5. (May introduce some of the little “odds and ends” concepts that are needed for quiz #4 next time.)

Thursday 3/9

Not this quarter.

2016 Fall

Monday 11/21

I was not feeling well — probably should have stayed home — so this was mostly a lab work day. Went over the schedule for remainder of the term, introduced some Logic transport controls: autopunch, replace, cycle, etc.

Tuesday 11/22

Not this quarter.

Wednesday 11/23

Class surprised me — in a good way — by largely being present on this Wednesday afternoon before Thanksgiving. Collected and reviewed quiz #3. Did a brief overview of quiz #4, reminded class to print it out, and explained how to find information to answer questions about the Logic program by using Logic on-screen tools. Went over the requirements for the final project and summarized the calendar for the rest of the term. I heard perhaps eight of the completed copies of assignment #6.

Thursday 11/24

Not this quarter.

2016 Spring

Monday 5/30

Memorial Day Holiday — no class.

Tuesday 5/31

Collected proposals and then created a “specimen” example of the features of assignment #6 in order to clarify what it requires. As the class worked on #6 (or, in some cases, #5) I reviewed the submitted proposals, wrote comments on them, and created the presentation schedule. I returned the proposals, explained the need for some students to resubmit with modifications by Thursday, and gave some brief general advice about preparing and giving presentations. There was no time left to assess #5, so now that must happen on Thursday, along with the assessment of #5. Likely plan is to make a circuit assessing #5 at the start of the period and to then make a second circuit assessing #6 at the end of the period.

Wednesday 6/1

Class is making good progress on finishing #6, so that became the primary goal today, with the session devoted largely to lab. I introduced cycle, replace, and auto punch. I assigned quiz #4 (not #3!) as being due one week from today on Wednesday, June 8. Class moved on to start final project.

At the next session I must do the remaining history topic, with quiz #3 due one week later on Monday, June 13 and test #2 at the following class session on Wednesday, June 15. (I did share this calendar plan with the class today.) Also at the Monday, June 6 class I will hear #6… and any other earlier assignments that students want to play back.

Thursday 6/2

Work on finishing #5 and #6. There were a lot of little questions and issues, and I spent a lot of time dealing with those, including some students who had fallen behind a bit on sampling and/or rewire. I did a pass to hear #5 but there were a few students whose projects I did not hear. I did not hear #6. That will happen at the start of the next period — or right after we do the first class presentations.

Alerted the class to the final exam session schedule and encouraged them to enter an alarm in their calendars. Explained the availability of the MW class for additional lab time. Reminded the class about presentations starting next time, and I collected the revisions of proposals.

2016 Winter

Monday 2/29

Hear second pass of #5. Present topic #3.  Look at punching-in in Logic.

Tuesday 3/1

Not this quarter.

Wednesday 3/2

Did the third electronic music history topic and assigned quiz #3 as due in one week on Wednesday, March 9. Also assigned quiz #4 as due at the following session on Monday, March 14, and told class they will need to use the Logic application to do it. Work time (final opportunity) on #6. Only a few were finished, so I delayed playback until the START of next class, but also told them to move on to final project if it isn’t complete by then. Went over the format for the final project and reminded class of final exam session date and time.

Thursday 11/19

Not this quarter.

2015 Fall

Monday 11/16

Hear first pass of #5. Present topic #3.  Look at punching-in in Logic.

Next time: Go over audio editing tools in Logic.

Tentative plan:

  • 11/16: Hear #5. Work on #6. Present history topic 3. Assign quiz #3.
  • 11/18: Hear #6 plus work time on #6. Begin work on final project.  Present details of Logic needed to do quiz #4. Assign quiz #4
  • 11/23: Quiz #3 due — collect and review. Hear remaining #6 assignments. Work time on final project.
  • 11/25: Work time on Final Project
  • 11/30: Quiz #4 due — collect and review. Return quiz #3. Work time on final project.
  • 12/2: Final regular meeting. Test #2. Work time on final project
  • FINAL EXAM SESSION as per schedule — project playback only

Tuesday 11/17

Not this quarter.

Wednesday 11/18

Heard the rest of #5. Went over final project guidelines. Introduced the audio editor in Logic — very basic features.

Thursday 11/19

Not this quarter.

Friday 11/20

Not this quarter.

2015 Spring

Monday 6/1

Work time to finish #5, but then ran out of time to hear any of them. Must hear them at start of next period. Many have started #6. Took a quick look at Logic audio editor. Reviewed the remaining schedule for the term, with a basic overview of the final project and prospective work time on that beginning next week as #6 is finished.

Tentative plan:

  • 6/3: Hear #5. Work on #6. Present history topic 3. Assign quiz #3.
  • 6/8: Hear #6. Begin work on final project. (Likely that there won’t be much time for final project work at this session.) Present details of Logic needed to do quiz #4. Assign quiz #4
  • 6/10: Quiz #3 due — collect and review. Work time on final project.
  • 6/15: Quiz #4 due — collect and review. Work time on Final Project
  • 6/17: Return quizzes. Work time on final project.
  • 6/22: Final regular meeting. Test #2. Work time on final project
  • 6/25: Final exam session — final project playback, possible retakes of test #1.

Tuesday 6/2

Accepted presentation proposals today. Read them during class, evaluated them, created schedule, and returned them at the end of the period. (Only one student who was present did not supply a proposal.) Due to troubleshooting issues for individual students, did not have have time to review assignment #5 — barely had time to get the proposals back to the class! Likely schedule: Hear #5 this Thursday. Hear #6 next Tuesday. Nothing but presentations and final project work after that.

Wednesday 6/3

PLAN: Did third electronic music history topic, with quiz #3 due on Wed 6/10. Quiz #4 due on Monday 6/15. Work on #6. Heard almost half of #5 — two rows on the lefts side. Do the two rows on the right side next time. Also try to hear at least some of #6 next Monday.

Schedule plan:

  1. Mon 3/9: Hear #5. Students bring quiz 4 to compare to Logic on screen. Work on #6.
  2. Wed 3/11: Hear #6. Quiz #4 due. Students are now working on final project. Present topic #3.
  3. Mon 3/16: Work on final project.
  4. Wed 3/18: Quiz #3 due. Work on final project.
  5. Mon 3/23: Final regular class meeting. Work on final project. TEST #2
  6. Scheduled final exam session (listed in calendar) for final project playback — attendance required.

Thursday 6/4

Neglected to post a summary on the date of the class, so this update is written the following week from recall. I believe I still need to hear the last two assignments. The final listing of class presentations was shared.

2015 Winter

Monday 3/2

(Weak attendance today — only perhaps 18 present.) Work time to finish #5. Some were ready to start #6. Introduced SampleSwap and imported sample loops into Logic. Did not go into the Logic audio editor as needed for the assignment #6, so need to do that next time. Reviewed activities remaining this quarter, including a very superficial overview of the final project, and a reminder about the schedule for week 12.

Things to do:

  • third EM history topic
  • overview of Logic features needed to be covered for quiz 4.

Tuesday 3/3

Reviewed, with a demo, the process of rewiring Logic and Reason with multiple hardware interface channels. Lots of work time on #5, which should be finished before the start of the Thursday class. Spoke about the need to shift to a focus on individual work on projects and to shift away from my presentations.

Wednesday 3/4

Did NOT hear #5, thinking that it was better to move forward toward doing #6 and the quizzes, given that we need to get started on the final projects very soon. MUST stay on schedule for #6, and told students to think of it as the start of their work on final project. Reversed the order of quizzes #3 an #4 and covered the material necessary to doing #3. Went over the basics of the Logic audio editor. Went over the features of the final project.

Next: hear #5, present the third history topic, collect and review quiz #4, and assign quiz #3 as due one week later.

Thursday 3/5

Heard #6. Finished the last presentation on rewiring. Work time on projects. Reminder about schedule for the rest of the term, and especially about time issues: parts of the last three classes will be for class presentations, the date of the final exam session, etc.

2014 Spring

Monday 6/2

Very poor attendance today! A few minutes of work time at start of period, then a pass through the room to assess #5. Assigned Quiz #4 (reverse order) as due next Monday. Told them about Quiz #3 coming later. Work time on #6. Mentioned final project — work starts next week.

Strongly suggested that students print the quiz and bring it with them to Wednesday’s class, and then take some time to see which questions might require them to be looking at the screen in order to answer.

Note: Did not do auto punch, cycle, replace, and so forth as the student computers do not have the auto punch button showing! Next time need to go through the process of using the control click on empty area of the control bar to get the custom menu and add the button.

Tuesday 6/3

Tentative: Introduce the audio portion of rewiring Reason to Logic. Did the basic connection of the Reason RW: L/R connection. Also demoed connecting instruments directly via the Reason hardware interface—but did this very quickly and it did not go completely smoothly. May want to do it again. Remind class that presentation proposals are due at next class, and of consequences for not having them finished by then. Some work time on #5, but only a handful were done, so promised them perhaps 15 minutes to work on it Thursday before playing it back.

Next: collect, review, return proposals and construct the presentation schedule. Hear #5. Demonstrate the “external midi instrument” rewire connection.

Wednesday 6/4

Heard the last of the assignment #5 stragglers. Most of today was work time on #6. Originally it had been listed as “tentatively” due today, but it will now be “really” due at the next class on Monday. Went over auto punch, replace, cycle controls in Logic. Went over the features of the final project and the schedule for working on it. Reminder about the quiz #4 that is due next week.

Next: hear #5, present the third history topic, collect and review quiz #4, and assign quiz #3 as due one week later.

Thursday 6/5

Collected, reviewed, and returned presentation proposals. Some will require changes and resubmission. Created presentation schedule. (Presentations begin at next class.) Modified the #6 requirement to allow final project to count also for #6, but did not announce this to the class. Demonstrated how to use Logic external midi instruments to record/play Reason instruments from inside of Logic.

2014 Winter

Monday 3/3

Completed Test #1. Introduce SampleSwap and had students sign up. Downloaded a sample and placed in a folder in my directory, then imported it into a track by “import audio” and by dragging. Did not edit or beat match the sample yet.

Held over for next time: Third history topic, hearing assignment #5.

Tuesday 3/4

Collected, reviewed, and critiqued class presentation proposals. Schedule presentations for students who turned in their proposals today. Many proposals needed revision and a few were not acceptable as submitted – improved proposals are due on Thursday. Began the (quick!) description of how to import and edit audio in the Logic audio editor, then imported the edited audio files into the NN19 sampler in Reason. There may be more things to demonstrate about this process on Thursday (or perhaps we just work with what we have), and the class was asked to bring in samples then to work with in class.

Wednesday 3/5

Chose to not hear #5 today, as it was more important to move on to the things described below. Need to hear #5 at next session. Demonstrated how to import musical loops into Logic and synchronize them with the project – changing tempo of project or setting sample length to bars or locators. 30 minutes of work time on #5 (or #6). Third electronic music history topic—and deadline for associated quiz #3 one week from today. Mentioned that while #6 is ostensibly due next Monday at the end of the period, I don’t expect everyone to finish—and an alternative is to incorporate it into the final project and show me how it is used. Also spoke about the short time remaining and the need to begin work on the final project. (Still need to go over the final project requirements at the next class meeting.)

Thursday 3/6

(Did not take full notes on this session at the end of class, so this recollection is from several days later.) Looked more fully at the Reason audio editor. Collected revised presentation proposals and finalized schedule for presentations. Reminded class that the first sessions are at the next class and emphasized the critical importance of being ready to go on assigned date. Other stuff…

2013 Spring

Monday 6/3

  • Completed into to using imported audio in Logic by going over how to match imported loops to Logic tempo
  • Introduced the final project guidelines
  • Announced deadlines for quizzes #3 (two weeks) and #4 (next Monday)
  • (Next time – third history topic)

Tuesday 6/4

  • Presentation proposals collected, reviewed, returned for revision/update, and schedule posted
  • No time to hear assignment due today, so will hear next time.
  • Consequently, many will probably not finish the following assignment by its due date on Thursday. Will allow an extension, but will also suggest that students begin final project and incorporate material from next assignment into the final project. (Need to go over final project work schedule in class.)

Wednesday 6/5

  • Instructor laryngitis – not able to speak much – so period was predominantly work time on #5 and #6.
  • Reminded of the switched quizzes and need to look at computer today to do #4.
  • Opportunity to hear #5 (and possibly #6?)
  • Need to do third history topic next Monday.

Thursday 6/6

  • Heard remaining #6
  • Work time on #7, but many did not finish, so…
  • I can hear some next time, but…
  • Those who don’t finish my instead incorporate #7 requirements into final project so that they will have…
  • Time to get to work on final projects.
  • Reviewed a few remaining final project proposals and scheduled them.
  • Rather than taking formal class time to hear projects, I plan to circulate while students work on final project next week and hear remaining projects

  • Hear #5
  • Work time on #6
  • Hear #6
  • Begin work on final project if possible.
  • Present third history topic and assign take-home quiz as due next week.

Thursday 3/7

  • Planned to hear #6 and #7, but…

  • Rather than taking formal class time to hear projects, I plan to circulate while students work on final project next week and hear remaining projects.
  • Work time on #7 and start time on final project.
  • Went over plan for remainder of term, and reminder of final exam session date, etc

Friday 3/8

  • Hear #5
  • Work time on #6

Will certainly need to delay #6 until Monday, with work time this Wednesday. (DID NOT: Went over the Time and Pitch Machine. Did not do the third EM topic – should do so next time.)

ON WEDNESDAY – I NEED TO STAY TO KEEP THE LAB OPEN.

Tuesday 6/5

Presentation proposals collected, read, approved, returned with comments. Some students are required to submit their revisions at next class. Work time on upcoming project.

Wednesday 6/6

Hear remaining #5. Went over #6. Completed sample editing by showing Time and Pitch machine. Work time on #6. Due next class.

(OLD: Finish and but did not hear #5, preferring instead to do the EM topic. Need to hear 5 and 6 next time. (Mentioned that while students might decide to not quite finish 6 by next class, that it is better to finish and move on to final project.) Third history topic and assign quiz for next Wednesday. Work time on #6 assignments. Went over basics of final project, remaining schedule, etc. )

Thursday 3/8

Reminder of the start of presentations next week. Discussed the need to start work on final projects and possibly to schedule extra lab time. Heard #6. Did the written test (later than I would like this quarter). Work time on #7.

Friday 3/9

No Friday class this quarter.

2012 Spring

Monday 3/5

Heard some #5, but many were still not quite done. They know that I will here them during early part of period on Wednesday. Will certainly need to delay #6 until Monday, with work time this Wednesday. Went over the Time and Pitch Machine. Did not do the third EM topic – should do so next time.

Tuesday 3/6

Some work time on #6 – most probably finished but only heard a few. Hear the rest at the start of next period if possible. Went over basics of extracting audio from a CD, editing it in Logic, and importing to Reason sample. Did not discuss audio looping. TEST IS NEXT CLASS.

Wednesday 3/7

Finish and but did not hear #5, preferring instead to do the EM topic. Need to hear 5 and 6 next time. (Mentioned that while students might decide to not quite finish 6 by next class, that it is better to finish and move on to final project.) Third history topic and assign quiz for next Wednesday. Friday 3/9

Collected and reviewed quiz #4 – only about 1/3 of class had done it, unfortunately. (We addressed this.) Work time on #5 and #6 and final. Presented the third electronic music history topic and assigned quiz #3 as due next week. Heard some #5 and #6 assignments, but announced that it would be OK to play them at the START of class next Friday. Introduced the final project and reviewed the remaining calendar.

Tuesday 3/1

Accepted, commented on, and returned class presentation proposals. That that require revision and resubmission must be returned at next class meeting. Presentation schedule is posted. Went over the final project, including a reminder about date and time. Work time on assignment #7 – originally due today but most were not finished. Must hear it at next session.

Wednesday 3/2

Heard only a VERY few assignment 6. Final project requirements are now fully disclosed – students know deadline for playback and the necessity of starting soon and working efficiently to finish it. Went over the time/pitch machine.

NEXT time: must present remaining topic and assign quiz 4.

Thursday 3/3

Plan: Hear #7. Finalize presentation schedule and proposed topics. Work time on final project.

Friday 3/4

Reminder of need to enroll in Intermediate Electronic music this coming quarter since, best case, it will not be offered again until winter term of 2012, and if we must eliminate additional sections it is possible that it might not be back until spring 2012!15 minutes of work time on quiz 4 to finish it up, followed by quiz review. 45 minutes work time on #6 before grading it. Introduce the final history topic and clarify that quiz 3 is due at start of period next week. Go over final project requirements and the details of our remaining schedule.

2010 FallMonday 11/15

Tuesday 11/16

Mostly work time on #7, which is due at next class. Still some #6 work to see. Went over final project and schedule for remainder of the term.

Wednesday 11/17

A few people showed up who had missed test #1 on Monday! I let them take it today. Much of the period was spent working on #6 which was due today – but many were not done. Went over a few additional editing techniques for matching samples to time. Did NOT do the third EM topic this week – Must do this on Monday. Must assign BOTH REMAINING QUIZZES that day, likely due the following Monday, though Wednesday would also be possible.  Introduced the final project format and reviewed the rough outline of our calendar for the remainder of the term.

Thursday 11/18

Reviewed final project stuff, reminded about need to submit required revisions to presentation proposals, projected the presentation schedule, reviewed class schedule for remainder of term including date/time for final exam session. Heard #7 – a number probably still need to be reviewed.

Friday 11/19

Second-to-last regular class meeting! Lots to do!
Went over remaining schedule: this class, two weeks from today (last regular class), then final exam session. Quizzes 3 and 4 due at start of period next week. We’ll do test 2 at end of final exam session. Next session devoted almost entirely to work on final project – exception being quiz review. Did third EM history topic.Heard all pre-6 assignments but decided to NOT hear #6 today so that no time would be taken away from getting started on the final project. MUST hear #6 at the final class session in two weeks! Also at that session, probably give people about 15 minutes at the start of the period in case they need to use the Logic program to review material for quiz 4 questions.

Hear remaining project 6. Announced the final project and the schedule for the remainder of the term.

Thursday 11/19

Work time on final project. Finalized topics and posted schedule.

Friday 11/20

Hectic class due to the two November holidays. Started with review of quiz 4. Then work time on project 6, along with explanation of final project and work time on that. In the end I did NOT get to hear #6, as there was too much else to do – will need to hear it during last class meeting. Introduced new material on EM history for quiz 3, which is due at start of period at next class. Also introduced autopunch/replace/cycle in Logic. Announced planned schedule for next class: Accept and review quiz 3, work time on final project, hear #6, test in last 45 minutes of that class.

Monday 3/2

Primarily work time on #6. Heard the few remaining #5 projects. Announced next quiz (#4 ahead of #3). Heard some #6 projects – it was due today, surprisingly – and will hear others on Wednesday. On Wednesday, two options include the EM history topic and starting work on the final project – or both.

Tuesday 3/3

Mostly work time #7. Introduced the final project assignment. Accepted presentation proposals, returned with comments – and in some cases a request for revisions by Thursday. Posted the presentation schedule. Did NOT hear #7 yet since only two students were finished – will hear at start of class on Thursday.

Hear remaining project 6. Announced the final project and the schedule for the remainder of the term.

Thursday 3/5

Work time on final project.

Friday 3/6

Note that some significant adjustments had to me to the schedule of events in order to complete #6 today and move on to the final project.
Reviewed quiz #4. Announced change to #3 – I will present next week and it will be due the following week, the same day as test #2. I heard remaining #5 projects. Did NOT do the EM history topic today. Did NOT cover drop/cycle (as on quiz #4). Will do both next time.

Monday 11/17

Primarily work time on #6.

Tuesday 11/18

Mostly work time on first rewire assignment. Introduced External tracks to record MIDI control of Reason instruments. A lot of individual work time. Will not do 6a/7 this term, but will incorporate these techniques into final project this term. Individual troubleshooting. Outlined the final project briefly. NEED TO: do detailed description of final project, hear the rewire project, return the proposals and schedule them.

Wednesday 11/19

Today: DID NOT hear #6. Discuss final project. EM topic #3 and announce quiz 3. (Still need to review/introduce loop/overdub/punch recording techniques.)

Thursday 11/20

Briefly demonstrated the process of turning any sample into a sound for a NNXT or NN19 instrument. Stated that this (assignment 7) would not be a separate project this quarter, but would instead be incorporated into the final project, with assignment 7 credit for doing this. AGAIN did not hear 6 – will hear at start of period on TUESDAY. Announced presentation schedule – which begins on TUESDAY.

Friday 11/21

TALK ABOUT REMAINING SCHEDULE! Collect and review quiz 3. Review the steps to download, save, import, and edit an audio file. Review steps to backup files on server and on memory stick. Go over final project requirements. Assign quiz 4. Go over drop and cycle and the transport window generally.
