A student dropped by my office this morning before class to relate how uncomfortable it was when I had to deal with a classroom policy issue near the end of Tuesday’s class. I agreed that the situation was extremely uncomfortable for everyone — for the student who spoke to me this morning, for the student who had to leave the room, for all other students in the room, and for me.
I want you to know that I get no pleasure at all from having to deal with such issues, and I don’t like having to deal with them at all — especially in the college classroom. But I also need everyone to understand that you should expect me to follow through on the syllabus and other policies and their consequences. So, as awkward and embarrassing as it is for all of us, I’m serious about policies (in this case the cell phone policy) and that these policies are there for reasons related to the classroom environment and to student success.
At this point the actual incident is behind us, and I don’t plan to mention it again.
Thanks for understanding.
